First time with a broody- hatch day is here-not sure what to do?!!??

By the way! Pee Wee has the face only a mother could love!

He is cool though. Been thinking of getting naked necks myself.

He is an ugly little son of a gun! lol But when you see them as chicks you fall in love. You should get some for sure!!

I'm waiting on eggs to hatch from a broody too. It's my first time hatching anything and my first time with a broody too. So needless to say I am definately nervous and excited about this hatch. Our EE hen Hazel is sitting on 10 eggs which should be due to hatch Friday. The eggs she is sitting on are from our own flock. We sold all of our adult roosters and 9 days after getting rid of the last rooster Hazel decided to go broody. Since there was the possibility of our own eggs being fertile we decided to let her sit on some of those rather than buying eggs and risking her not being a proper broody. The moms of the eggs are EEs and RIRs, and the dad is likely my EE roo. We had a BR roo too but he was sold a week and a half or so before the EE roo and was the submissive roo.
I'm getting anxious to see if anything hatches. I tried to candle at day 8 and day 16 and I think I saw what I was supposed to. I don't have a candler and I've never done it before so honestly I was just going off pictures I had seen online. If nothing hatches I have a source for cheap chicks and I could get some breeds I want to add to my flock.
I hope something hatches from these eggs though

. Likely we will end up selling chicks that hatch though.

You are in the same boat as me. My broody is even an EE. haha But all the eggs are hers as my older ladies don't care for the roos attentions much anymore.

I don't have a proper candler either, just trying to do the best with what we've got right now and comparing pictures too. When are yours due to hatch? It looks like mine should be around Monday or Tuesday.....

Good luck to you! Keep me updated!!

Oh my goodness! No doubt. I must confess though, I have spent waaay too much time on here the last week since I signed up. I have actual work to do and it just keeps piling up! lol I guess I better get to it.

Same here !! It's addictive. I guess probably because I can talk to other poultry obsessed people, whereas in 'real life' I only encounter normal people, and they don't care much to hear about duckies...

I know right? I drive everyone in my family nuts with chicken and duck stories/information. To say that they are about sick of hearing about Ida's eggs is an understatement.

On the other hand, I LOVE duckies!!!

This Friday 6/8/12 should be day 21. I have a small flock. 6 adult hens right now and they aren't even a year old yet. I have 2 RIRs and 4 EEs that are laying. There are 10 teenagers (12 week olds) that were just added to the adults (the cochins, frizzle, NN, Ameracaunas, Polish, EE/Polish mix, and leghorns in my signature). Most of the teenagers are hens, there are only 2 cockerals in that batch. I plan on keeping one cockeral right now, because we don't need 2 roosters again.

Ya'll know this site is better than facebook? It really is much more fun!

X2 I'm not a FB fan. BYC is more than enough for me and quite frankly, the amount of time I spent here...

Spiderlady and Chickenreferee: The problem is... you get chickens. And you get addicted, so you want more and more. And then you get this idea of hatching your own. And you think "how do I do that?" Then you discover BYC. And you get addicted, so you spend your time either here or in the coop, checking on you broody or in front of the incubator, staring at the eggs.

Yep, I think that about describes it!

My poor husband... he had no idea what he was getting into. mmmwwahaaahaha (evil laugh). He's wasn't exactly an animal person, but I guess he is now, like it or not. Building a coop, stitching up an injury, making duck booties and soaking feet, helping out a baby stuck in the shell... in the last two years he's gotten quite the repertoire of experience with ducks.
