First Timer Looking For Hatch Buddy!

Quote:
Invite mother in law to come stay with you instead so you can show her how to candle. That way everyone is happy and you can stick around during lock down.

Jeez, stay off-line a couple of days, and I miss all kinds of stuff

Fluffy, I'm so, so sorry to hear about your eggs, I know how much you were looking foward to them.

Have you found replacement eggs yet?

BOJO, OMG, I know I have some infertile eggs in the bator, guess I'd better get them out!

Kiwi, when I candle my eggs, I can see them bouncing around in there, but you have to hold still long enough for them to move, seems like they are the same as human babies, when you want to feel them move is when they decide it's time for a nap

Walks, can you explain what you mean by "not drawn down yet"? I've never read that term before. Looks like you are going to have an exciting couple of weeks!

Gloria,

NYCMadness, the darker the room, the easier it is to see. With my brown eggs, I can't see the veining or anything else, except the air cell. On a few of my green eggs, I can't even see that much, the shell is to dark to see thru no matter how I try.

Hi Oopsie, how ya doin?

Thank you Ooopsy_daisy!
That is helpful! I noted that some of the eggs had a darker yolk.
I will keep hope that something will hatch, I will also keep them there and candle them again next week to see if there are any changes. Does it sound like a good idea?

CarrieHelene, Thank you for your reply! I can see the air sac too in all of the eggs.

Thanks Ooopsy and Carrie! I'm so eggcited to finally have little baby duckies! Pics coming as soon as the hatch is all done!

I haven't heard anything from Miss_Jayne yet today but I'm sure the 4th one has made it through the hatch by now.

Cleaned my baby brooder this morning in preparation of them coming back home.

All ready got them some starter and I know where my heat lamp is. So I think I'm all ready for the little guys and girls... I hope I'm not forgeting anything.

Good Luck everyone with your new babies coming.

I have been known to hatch eggs ONLY to be practicing candling and taking notes. Yes, whole hatches just for it.

In the last week, things change a LOT in an egg. It goes mostly dark, the unabsorbed yolk can still be seen in the small end IF the chick is facing the right way.

The last day or two the aircell pulls way down against against the chick. If the chick is too dry, or the hatch has been difficult, it can be more air than chick sometimes, I call it drawing down. It makes it very obvious when a chick nears hatching. Usually you can see a chick pipped into the air cell very clearly once that happens.

Severe drawdown can be a sign of a too dry chick/ stuck chick. It also indicates that the chick is due within about 24 hours and that longer is not better in most cases.

Extensive candling however careful is not good for eggs in general and is not recommended. Since I hatch specifically for the purpose I accept the risk in those hatches in order to learn. Most people don't do that.

I found it gives me a really good idea of what is going on in there in other hatches and I like that.

But if you do it too much, or are too rough - some of the over handled eggs sometimes won't hatch. And every time you pick up an egg you increase the chances of dropping one - also bad for the digestion.

Candling can let you in on what's there. But eggs are fragile living things, easily broken. There are trade-offs.

It's something to consider practicing if you do have " free " home grown eggs. Notes, pictures, practice all pay for themselves in later hatches.

Wow, Walkswithdog, that info is really cool. I must remember to pick up a notebook so I can start making notes.

Yay!! Gloria! I'm sooo jealous, my hatch day can't get here fast enough

I know we are all in waiting mode, so not alot going on right now, but I thought I'd post an update on whats happening at my place. Let's see, on Tuesday, I removed 4 eggs that were infertile, and 1 that had a blood ring, and showed no more development. On Wednesday morning, I got up and opened the bator to turn the eggs. Eeew, bad smell. Ok, so this is what BYC hatchers are talking about. Start sniffing eggs. 1/4 way thru-can't smell anything. 1/2 way-nope, nothing. 3/4's, ok, maybe the smell isn't coming from the bator (6 cats, 2 dogs-end up with very, umm, interesting smells sometimes). Then I hit the green eggs. Holy jeez, there it is

. Can I just say, that is just nasty. I'd rather smell chicken poo! So I'm down to 21 eggs in the bator, only 4 of which are my banty cochins
hit.gif
hope those 4 make it

So what's happening with all of you???? Updates please
