go to a LFS and get fish there walmart and petco are probably two of the worst stores. Especially wally world a place that sells toilet paper and fish equals a bad combonation. Petco always seems to have sick fish all the time the may look healthy until you look at them closely, I was about to buy some gouramis but i took a close look at them and guess what they have. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK ICK. so never buy from those two stores unless your buying equipment.

thank you but i still love looking at their fish because they look geoustes and they are the only pet stores that sell fishies that aren't foating upsie douwn but...they have the most stuip names ever there like the neon ghost something fish at wall-mart and the crabs are so cute

I wish I had time to respond to a bunch of the post in the last few days, but I'm running low on time today.

For the person with the fish flipping upside down. I don't think its swimbladder because fish are usually able to stay upright. I suspect there is a nasty bacterial infection in the digestive tract causing gas buildup in the bottom half of the fish (where the stomach and intestines are). Stop feeding for a few days and start treating with an antibacterial. Your chances of saving the little fellow are slim, but its a shot. Good luck.

For the person wanting to try their hand at breeding Betta. Breeding Betta is a very intensive endeavor. Not as easy as you would think. I really think you wouldn't have enough room on your desk. In addition to the space issue and water damage to the desk, the wait of the water is going to cause the desk to sag in the middle, which isn't good for the tanks to have uneven water weight on the panels of the tank. May I suggest getting a Betta and seeing how long you can keep it alive. I've had Betta live for 7+ years. Those small water environments are labor intensive to keep clean. There's a wealth of knowledge to be had, as well as lots of support for those considering breeding Betta at the IBC (International Betta Congress). You can often get your hands on some pretty nice fish through members, too. Here's a link. http://ibcbettas.org/pages/ In the mean time, there's some wonderful livebearers that would be easier to breed. Oh, and not all Walmarts and stores like that are created equal. I've seen a Walmart in a aquarium hobby community that rivaled most dedicated fish stores. Betta arrive in individual containers. If you can find out what day they receive shipments you can get them before there's a chance of cross contamination of diseases.

To the person with the Shebunkins. Good for you getting them out of that fish bowl! They will out grow the 30 also. If you have city water, you have chloramines and chlorine and must neutralize it. You may have just gotten lucky or slowly killed fish in the past and not realized it because the water changes were small. Chlorine will dissipate on its own, but chloramaine won't. It will burn their gills and they won't be able to take up oxygen, as well as other functions. Hanging out at the bottom may be because of other health issues developed in the bowl. They also probably have lost muscle tone because of not being able to work those muscles. The change in water chemistry could be another factor.

Ich can be treated by slowly raising the tank temp to 85 degrees for 4 days and dropping it back down. The organism can't handle the temp. Don't do that if the fish and other critters you have in there can't handle it.

I apologize for any typos, I'm short on time.

Okay, what I originally came on here to post about is a safety recall on Marineland Stealth aquarium heaters. I've made a separate post about it with a link to the recall.

hey guys i got 6 cichlids in and they are about 2-4 inches in length when can i start giving them SMALL feeder goldfish or rosy red minnows? I will NOT feed them feeder guppies because sometimes when i go to get feeder guppies i see a beautiful male and want to keep it in a seperae tank with some females and what do you know? 10 MILLION LITTLE FEEDER BABIES SWIMMING AROUND!!!!! That cannot happen lol

P.S. i know it would be a ultimate supply of feeder guppies but the males are just sometimes to pretty to give up

I wouldn't even dare to feed Cichlids feeder goldfish. They are more herbivorous than you think. Just use the usual Cichlid pellets you see at the fish store, and maybe supplement protein with krill.

Feeding feeder fish is a recipe for disaster unless you are breeding those feeder fish yourself in a healthy, established feeder tank.

Most pet store cichlids are small enough that they will eat pellet and a variety of other foods (including veggies and frozen/thawed bloodworms) and have no need for live for live foods.

My favorite staple food for all of my fish is anything by Hikari. http://hikariusa.com/diets/cichlid

Their
formulas are fantastic if you analyze for protein content, etc.... and your fish will love their food. I like all my food to be sinking, rather than floating. I also avoid anything freeze dried like freeze dried tubifex. Some fish end up having swimbladder issues with dry foods like this (especially if they aren't pre-soaked.)

i am not exactally sure on the species except one its called electric labordous and the others are assorted cichlids and hikari is a little to costly for me that is why i wait for the free sample time of the year with them lolz. But how big will they be when i could feed them feeder fish?

I believe you mean Labidochromis? Those are one of the herbivorous species I mentioned. They reach about 6 inches as adults. They do not eat fish so you are out of luck. Nor will they get big enough to eat feeder fish. They would just bully them to death. Any cichilds from the Lake Malawi area are mostly herbivorous. NONE will eat those goldfish, I can tell you that. It also takes years for them to grow to their adults size. I'm sorry but the feeder fish are out. Just as itsy said, they are not a healthy food choice either, unless you are rearing them yourself.
