I have sand in mine although I would stay away from white sand the poop is very visible. If you’re going to do live plants I’d look into one of the nutrient rich substrates. Now the type of plants I have no idea I don’t really know much about live plants lol.
I have white sand. If you don't have poop machines (like goldfish) in the tank it's doable. It reminds you to siphon clean regularly.

I have Java Fern in all of my tanks. It doesn't require nutrients from the substrate as they attach to the rocks, decorations. The plants take in nitrates through the water, and they're fairly easy to grow, too. My 15 gallon has an old florescent bulb and the Java Fern does well.

Bettas do poop a lot if i remember correctly.

Java fern grew like a weed in our 75 gal tank. I think ill do that again.

Water changes will be once a week because of our hard water. Its the only way the fish survive

Mine seem to I wasn’t able to purchase a siphon yet so scoop the sand best I can but it still shows but I also have multiple other fish causing poop.

I do water changes twice a week but I think I’m gonna start doing once a week since my tank has been cycled.

I found some different colored sand. And ive never really liked white.

I use to do it mid week so Wendsday or Thursday for all the tanks.
Our starting ph is a 8 and i got our 75 gal to a 7.

We have incredibly soft water here, I have to add buffers so the pH doesn't crash and kill my fish. But I don't do water changes weekly, the tanks don't need it.

When I was raising the pleco fry I had 50 of them in a bare 10 gallon tank. I did a small water change every day and lost very few before selling them. It's doable, you just have to make yourself do it.

Having soft water would probably be harder than hard water.
Our ph is always what affected the tank. And some plants helped it. Plus someone we know who has his own fish store helped us a lot.
