fishing?

You dont have to have exspensive gear to have a great time fishing and youll even catch fish with non exspensive gear. You and some of the kids will probaly need a liscense. I would check with any store that sales hunting and fishing liscense. The $12 poles will work just find. They just usually dont last for years. Hooks, Line, and sinkers, and maybe some bobbers and youre good to go. As far as bait, for trout, they love "rooster tails" you can find them at walmart for $2 or 3 bucks, they also love whole kernel corn, just buy you a can of corn and place a piece or two of corn on your hook and throw it out there. Since you are fishing in a lake they probally are several kinds of fish in it, and redworms, or night crawlers are a good bet to catch fish on. Talk to the people that works at bait shops in youre area they will be able to help you much more, and give you some great help and pointers. My kids love to fish.

You can pick up inexpensive fishing rods w/reels for your kids at a local Walmart for approx. 10-15 dollars apiece. Depending on your children's age, they may or may not need a license. You can easily get them at Walmart or a local bait and tackle shop.

If you go onto your state's DEC website, it'll give you useful information about what fish are in season, and the daily limits and size for the fish that you want to keep.

Trout fishing is a little tricky, so it's much easier to go for panfish. You can use a 5-gallon bucket or small cooler to keep the fish that you intend to eat. Save yourself some money, and go digging for little worms under damp rocks, leaves and tree bark. Put them in a little container w/holes punched in the top and a little soil.

You should bring a pair of needlenose pliers in case the hook goes to far into the fish, nailclippers to trim the monofilament when baiting the hooks and buy some #6 or #8 hooks, small sinkers, and a couple of bobbers.

Your kids will have a lot of fun!

You should probably look into what works locally. Ask around at the bait shop. Hang around where people are fishing at a lake or pier or state park. Different bait/tackle/methods work differently in different areas. And expensive tackle should not be needed. Have a friend who fishes, perhaps, just to ask questions? The suggestion about local fishing days for kids was a good one. Is there a state park anywhere near you? Etc.

thank you everyone for all the good advice!
i am going to get the fishing licenses and all in a week or so..i think we are going to go sometime next month and just make a day of it. might catch something, might not but i bet it will be fun!

Check with your wildlife department...they may have maintained lakes with a free fishing pole barow program...ours does.....also look into paylakes...they come with fishing poles. If you are determined to buy gear post an ad on craigslist and see if somebody has some old odds and ends to sell. Speaking from experience....you want to start cheap as a lot of what you buy will end up in the lake while a child is learning to cast....I bought my son 5 kids poles at a yardsale for 2.00....

When I learned to cast as a kid, my dad put one of those practice dummy lures on the end of my line. It was a tear shaped weight, that wouldn't get caught on things and I could just practice casting in the yard.

Maybe something like that might help you out, especially with so many kids needing to learn at once.

my uncle always took me fishing as a little girl cause i am a tomboy! I love to fish! I haven't fished at a lake in years though cause a fishing license here in Pa is atleast 15.00 dollars a person and thats not counting the trout stamps or the other needs. I have a 35 year old fishing pole and I dig my own snails (they work better than worms cause they last longer). I use pliers but if the hook is to deep I cut my line cause I don't like hurting the fish if its not worth keeping, or if I am fishing for fun. I sometimes use a net for when the fish gets close enough, that way it takes off some of the weight on my fishing pole!

I hope I have helped!!! I am sorry if i confused you!
