Flea control--what do you use?

How far around the house do you go? (In feet - diameter) What do you use on the yard?

Fahlain, what kind of salt? How heavily do you put it?

I figure they must be in the yard. I've put borax, frontline, and DE on them and in the house. Thanks.

Of all the weird stuff I have heard about flea control, around here, the one that has not failed me yet is garlic. I sprinkle it on their food and have not had any flea problems in years. It works on my cats too. And with 6 dogs (3 in house) and 23 cats (1 Inside, outside) there is alot of potental for fleas. My neighbor does the same thing. Sounds weird put it works.

Be VERY careful using garlic with dogs....it contains a chemical that is toxic to them. Generally large amounts are needed to see the effects of the toxin, but no studies have been done that I'm aware of that study long term effects of continued low doses........so I would be very cautious. I do not give my dog ANY garlic. Really its anything from the onion family that contains the toxin...onions themselves are far more toxic than garlic.

I read this thread earlier today because we have been having flea trouble with our three dogs; two Jack Russell Terriers and a Yorkie. We had used Frontline for years and it worked great but it just does not work at all anymore. I have been trying to find another product that will give my dogs some relief…one has bad flea allergies. This weekend I picked up some Biospot and thought I would give it a try.

Well after reading on here that several people said “DO NOT USE BIOSPOT” which I had put on them Saturday…I was very concerned. I googled Biospot to see what info I could find and read of people’s pets having severe seizures among other things and this increased my concern; although my dogs had not shown any ill effects I was defiantly not going to use the product again.

Well…

TONIGHT MY YORKIE HAD A SEVERE SEIZURE AND HE ALSO VOMITED! It was HORRIBLE!!! We quickly put him into the bath tub and gave him a bath; flushing him with a lot of water like I had read was recommended to do. So far he seems to be doing OK now but we are so worried about our "little Cash man"!

THANK YOU ALL FOR POSTING THAT INFORMATION!
It made me check into it. If I had not done that I would not have realized what was happening or why; but having just read it today we were able to act quickly which hopefully will help our little guy, "Cash" not have any more problems. We also washed our JRT’s too.

AND AGAIN...PLEASE DO NOT USE BIOSPOT ON ANY OF YOUR PETS!!!!

I use table salt. Good ol' fashioned table salt. I sprinkle it throughout the carpets, making sure there's enough that I can see salt crystals (but not coating until I see no more carpet!).

Wait 30 minutes or so, vacuum, and look in your bag or canister to see all the little dead black nasties. I wait about a week and redo this, because salt won't kill the eggs until after they hatch. After a week or so, all the flea eggs will have hatched and I just re-treat.

Oh so many different opinions it can make a persons head spin

I sprinkled the garlic on my dogs food last night and this morning and they ate better than they have in a while. They gobbled it right up! Now I need to do some more research on this garlic toxins

I have tried using the Frontline and it just seems to stop working within 1 to 1.5 weeks. I have tried the Adams Flea Dip - also didn't make it a week. We have 2 acres of flea breeding grounds and 2 dogs just that love to play in the sand!

I am going to check into the Comfortis next. I really like the Capstar - but again - it only works for a short period of time.

I heard that Red Lake Earth was the best for chickens to prevent fleas, mites and worms. You are suppose to sprinkle it in their coop and roost...also in their run. Its suppose to natural and you can eat the eggs. Just spinkle once a month.
