flea meds????

Also votes for AdVantage! We don't use it all the time, since our flea problem is sporactic (like after Willow has brought a couple home from a dog show). It works quickly and works for a month or more.

We use some beef cube flavored meds once a month, but not sure of the brand other than that it starts with an A. Not at home so I cannot go check.

However, I also add garlic to his diet via a peanut butter and garlic sandwich. Sounds yummy eh? But he eats it and is thankful. I also often add a crushed benadryl(sp?) pill if he is itchy that day(he has some mild skin allergies).

Plus I use Insecto(which is just another form of DE) in his bedding areas and such.

Since I started this combo I've not even seen a flea/tick/etc. His worm test also came back negative, though I was not worried, was just a yearly checkup.

Edit: ok, I am home now it does not start with an A, opps, its HeartGuard. No defense against fleas, just worms.

You can give your chickens garlic by adding a garlic toe to their water bucket, just take it out when it starts sprouting.

so I should not use Revolution! I just figured because we have so many pests that would do it all. I will just stick with the Frontline then. I am so afraid that my 3 dogs and 3 cats will get WNV or some sort of mite I wanted something that could kill everything.

Either Frontline or Advantage should do the trick then

I think they pretty much do the same thing. I have used them both and liked them both but frontline we get from Australia at a really good price.

Less than 30 dogs/year actually get West Nile Virus* and I think something like 99% recovery fully with no issues. It's different in them than it is in humans.
I would be a million times more worried about heartworm disease which is found in all 50 states and infects thousands and thousands of dogs each year.

I get these products free through promotion at my work, so I have personally (my dogs) tried many of them, and I have seen first hand which work and for what. I have heard way too many seminars on fleas and parasites too

Frontline Plus : Excellent for fleas, kills something like 99.8% of fleas within 48 hours. Good for ticks. Waterproof. DOESN'T do internal parasites.

Advantage : Excellent for fleas. Not waterproof or for ticks. DOESN'T do internal parasites.

Revolution : good, but not excellent for fleas or ticks. Not reliable for heartworm since its topical, so don't use it for that. claims to be infective for control of ear mites (very rare in dogs!) and scabies. Revolution is actually a better product to chose for cats than dogs.

Advantix : No personal experience, hospital I work for doesn't carry...DO NOT use if there is a cat in the household, slight contact is very toxic to cats.

Sentinel : MY PERSONAL FAV ! "Flea Birth Control" Fleas cannot produce eggs, and existing and future larvae will die when they eat the waste of the fleas who had fed on a animal w/ Sentinel. PLUS ITS A flavored monthly TABLET, which means no getting the liquid on your skin, very important for pregnant women who are giving the medicine or children who are snuggling w/ Fluffy. ALSO prevents Heartworm , roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.

Many people are worried their dog will pick up too many fleas on a walk or going to the park, but studies show that flea eggs drop from animals right after they wake up, so close to 100% of newly hatched fleas will be where the infected animal sleeps. Once a flea is on an animal, it DOES NOT leave its host (animal). It will feed and mate on the host before dying. This makes vaccuming the animal's sleeping area very important! Once the eggs hatch, the larvae will search out dark areas, whether thats under the bed, under the bushes outside, etc. so keep that in mind.

Sentinel can be mixed with the topical applications, so I keep Frontline/Advantage on hand to use about 1-2x in the summer if I see my dogs itch ( one of my dogs has flea allergies, so if she gets one flea on her, she's an itchin'). People who are just starting out on Sentinel can use Frontline or Advantage the first month or two get a start on killing the fleas.

ROTATE ROTATE ROTATE! These products all say they kill "99.8%" or "99.5%" in studies because some fleas will survive through the chemical...Use a different product once and awhile so you don't build up a colony of fleas that are immune to your favorite flea preventation.

Forgot to say,

don't bother getting OTC meds like Biospot, or Hartz, etc. They do not work and you will waste your money.

wow glowworm that is great thanks so much. I will now go back to look at Sentinel again! I know not to do the OTC crap I almost killed my cat once with Hartz. I need something that is easy to use and will work well for 3 Dogs and 3 cats that are all different sizes.
