I didn't realise ant powder had permethrin in. I had a hell of a job with red spider mites last year. No matter what I did I couldn't completely clear them. I used DE, mite spray ivermectin worked on my non layers. What is the best way to use ant powder and is it safe?
Naboo.... Utopia...in Star Wars... lol Not sure of the climate, however...Good point. I didn't consider cold since I don't know where Naboo is.![]()
Sorry I meant red mite. Not red spider mites. My mistake. I do know what infestations of mites can do. There is a lot of different advice out there. I have heard of permethrin to treat lice or mites but didn't realise that it was in ant powder. That is why I asked was it safe. What would be the best thing to kill and deter red mites.Just for clarification, red spider mites are little mites that infest plants. They are barely visible, and you can see a fine web. they suck the sap out of the plant, and can kill it.
Red mites infest poultry. Completely different critter. They can kill chickens, as can other types of parasites.
Ant powder is for ants. Unless it is made up of permethrin with that being the only active ingredient, and unless it is the right strength, do not use it on poultry. Using the wrong product can make your birds very ill, if it does not kill them. And would you want to eat the eggs or meat from a bird that may have a build up of toxic substance in her body?
DE, wood ash, oregano, mint, citronella, garlic, or other "natural" topical applications may deter parasites, but they will not eradicate an infestation. While bumbling around with "natural cures" your birds may end up dead.
Here in the USA the permethrin powders approved for use in poultry are 0.25%.last time I checked permethrin was not toxic to birds and in fact was suggest by 2 of your BYC educators in this thread and is also the preferred insecticide for poultry - I use ant powder that is permethrin based at 0.5%w/w.
And ant powder is the same as most crawling / flying insecticides as they all contain 0.5%w/w permerthrin
Here in the USA, Carbaryl is no longer labeled for use in poultry, dogs, some types of peas and other veggies, but it is still used in Canada. 5% Sevin is perfectly safe, but since it's not labeled for use in poultry, must of us choose not to use it. If it were not safe the Canadians would not be using it.and here is a little info on your safe sevin
Carbaryl is moderately to very toxic, and is labeled with a WARNING signal word. It can produce adverse effects in humans by skin contact, inhalation or ingestion. The symptoms of acute toxicity are typical of the other carbamates
