Flemish Giant Rabbits?

Yes, sorry about that... I corrected my original post... I meant to use your name but in my rush to get the post done, I glanced at the wrong post

I agree, not suitable for show rabbits. But for meat rabbits or just rabbits in general I found it interesting. It was an excerpt from Northern California Angora Guild Angora Handbook 2nd Edition.

Ok, because I feel this is an interesting article... I'll attempt to type it out

But I will post elsewhere since it is mostly off topic.

Thats what i thought.

Im kind of getting the hint that some on here tend to think that some of the breeding and showing practices on here are barbaric (wire cages). The wire cages are what most of us find that works best for us and the animals. I have vidoes of some of my rabits running around in my old setup. I will see if I can find them. If they would just listen to those with some experience with it and do their research they'd realize its very acceptable and not all that bad. Instead of chosing to go with the advice from those that don't show.

Ive been keeping up with this post to see how is goes and though ive never shown rabbits , and im not a fan of wire cages ... I agree with Chinbunny. If you ask for help dont ignore those with the experiece who are willing to help and give good advice. Showing animals and having them for pets are TOTALLY different worlds.

If people would just be a little more open minded and slower to put others down things would be alot friendlier and people would learn more from what considerate others have to share.

Well, I think that with the proper wire it's maybe okay...but what say you about cage sizes?

Also, what about in the heat? Are yours indoors? I'm thinking of burying a bunny box into a little hill so I can access it somehow, but it's also kinda underground and a cool place for them to chillax during the sizzling Summer days.

Check page 2. yes i keep them inside. I have a rabbit barn for them. In the heat I set up a sprinkler system to hose down the roof to keep them cool. Sometimes i let them out in a pen in the spring and summer when its nice. Always has to be supervised because my neighbors dogs have went after them more then once. the barn doors can be left open. but again, someone has to be home because of the dogs. I have two windows in the back, and four on each side for ventilation. Plus there are ventilation things near the roof on each end. Barn is also placed under plenty of trees too.

I also posted the ARBA recommendations for cage sizes per breed too. I use the 24x24's. and have one 30x30(might be larger). The ARBA guidebook says the only way a cage will damage the rabbits feet is if the bottom is put together wrong.

I think storeys guidebook to raising rabbits might have something on raising a colony of rabbits. I am on the meat rabbits list, and I know of a couple of people that ended up giving up on it. And went to a commercail setup instead. They were losing too many litters, and such.

Wire is fine for rabbits. I have a fench lop (who is about flemish giant size herself!) in a large out door rabbit hutch. Half is enclosed with a wood floor and the other half is wire. I only showed her casually when I was still in 4-H, so condition wasn't a big concern for me, but she spends most of her time on the wire. I actually think its cooler for them in the summer because they get some air from all sides.

She pretty much does. When I first brought her home it took her a little while to figure out what corner to use as her bathroom. Sometimes during the day I catch her sleeping inside the house, but during the night she is pretty active. I usually give her hay, food, and water in the cage portion and that keeps the inside nice an clean. Then when needed, I just scoop the shavings out of the wood section and put some new in there.

I have three mutts - one who is currently snuggled into my jacket - and Just love my rabbits. Ive been given ten different rabbit cages from people - two that are the largest AND wire - I so I like seeing other peoples set ups.
