What do you use to control the flies in your run? I do not have a problem with flies in the coop and I am using aromatic herbs to shoo the flea. But out in the run--well the girls do not eat all their veggie/fruit scraps and the flies gather! I have a homemade fly trap with fish and honey in it and that is working...somewhat. But I need a better fix. Any suggestions?

I've recently gotten some of the fly traps and set then in various places in and outside the coop in their grass yard. They do stink BAD, but they also catch lots and lots of flies! I'm probably attracting all the flies in my little village, but I don't care cause they are working. I also noticed they attract those pesty little gnats, and since the traps are up, I can sit outside with my chickens in the evening and not have a cloud of gnats in my face. The thing I like about the traps is the don't use chemicals to kill flies. I use DE in my coop and nesting boxes to keep mites and little pests out. I also mix; garden dirt, sand & DE for the chickens to dust in. They love it. I keep and area covered by a roof overhang filled with this cause that area doesn't get wet even in the worst rain.

Maybe your question was already answered, but I read somewhere on this site that Apple Cider Vinegar sprayed in the area will deter flies. I have yet to try it, but plan to.

Does the DE keep the flies down as well?
Yes it does.

The past few days have been grossly hot and humid here and the flies are out of control, they are even in the coop now. I've been researching fly control all afternoon and luckily I've found two places near me that sell food grade DE

I already have fly strips up and they aren't taking care of the issue, just two many I guess. I've been giving my girls lots of frozen treats lately and the flies just attack, the chickens don't even try to get a bite

I have fly tapes and a homemade trap... I went out today and found some DE. I haven't tossed it out yet.... But I surely will! I ope it works like I have read!

I found a homemade trap last weekend that I'm trying this weekend. take a wine bottle of Chardonnay, leave 3 inches of wine in the bottom and add several strips of mango to the bottle. that's it, the flies are said to be attracted to the smell of the decaying fruit. They specified the chardonnay--don't know if another type would work. I have a empty wine bottle and if I can remember- I'm getting a cheap char. this weekend and trying in the stable and the coop. I have found if you keep the manure scrapped up and in a covered container or composted it--they do get better. De has helped alot.
