FLOAT test CONFUSION!!!

I will upload some as soon as I can! The older guys are kept seperate as they are pests...they have started sleeping all sprawled out and I keep panicking hahaha

But when I go over they jump up so I suppose it isn't a bad thing. Had a bit of a scare earlier, as the heat lamp blew and I had to find a new one, one of the 3 day old chicks fell in the water freaking out and spent about 10 minutes falling over and shaking...i was terrified it was suffering from cold and shock...warmed it up, the shaking stopped and it is now walking again....but wow... My heart sank! I was so scared I would lose it...

All as it is, we have one splinter and not too happy bit all the rest seem perfectly healthy. I will try count them all tomorrow after work!
Not easy, they keep escping leg bands, even the kind designed for young quail chicks! Annoying!

I am wondering the best way to water them? they use an old gravy lid at the moment and it empties so fast they cry me awake very early...i put a cut down sauce tub (from the takeaway) so far so good, its not deep enough for them to drown in....but they keep bathing in it and pooing in it! Tired of changing the water....because they drink out of it too....any suggestions?

Get a deep enough dish to we're they still can have reach to it but put marbles or fish gravel in it so they can't drown or swim or bathe in it haha and that works perfect. Sorry about your scares. I know the feeling! My thermometer almost fell right on them, I was freaking too. Lol.

Now 3 more days and my 2nd batch should be due. Btw what colors are yours?

In total i have counted.

So discounting the two duds, and the two my friend broke, the three that died hatching, and the three that died after hatching :/

We have... *drumroll* including the 8 more today... 32...? out of total 50.

Which isn't bad if you take away the 10 we lost. And we still have a few eggs left, not very hopefull for these guys with them being so late, but i guess time will tell :]

Most of them are the typical colours. (Nearly all of them...i) t seems the English Whites didn't seem to make it except a couple!

There's also one i can't quite tell what colour it is... I'd say a golden brown colour...

I am DEFINITELY going to do a smaller batch when they guys are older, and try and pray that i get a few whites or golds.

One of the ones that died hatching was so gorgeous... and the only white i saw / thought there was until these other two arrived. They are absolutely tiny though compared to the others, but i'm not worried because of the last tiny one we had....who isn't tiny anymore!

So far all is going well, one has a lovely foot splint on and is getting used to it rather well.

Good look with the rest of your babies :D!

Oh also, one of them is really light compared to the rest of the typical quail colours, it's the only reason i can tell the guy apart!

They are getting rather skittish now too....feeding them in a nightmare they run to side of the brooder

(In the process of cleaning the brooder on the first 4)

and try dive out!

How's the chicks?

Soooo... On my last batch if buttons and tonight is the last night of turning. So before lockdown I have candled. To my surprise, I have one that hatching now! I didn't even see the external pip when I picked it up. But candled and see a lil chick already pipped. Cool, but 3 days early?

Aww that is great news! Sorry for the late reply, i'm overrun by poultry!

My lot are pretty amazing right now. Feathers are showing, they're trying so hard to fly every time i open their brooder, one nearly knocked my head off trying! They are off the heat lamp (not all of them but the first four)

Crazy little critters with different insane personalities!

There's my Kwanza ^

I can't wait until i can sex them, they are driving me crazy! One minute they sound female, the next they sound male. Very Confusing, but i am hoping to split them all in to groups as soon as possible, so i hope soon!

Too cute! They grow to fast don't they. My last batch is due today. Poor fellow that came out 2 days early don't look so good. I'm hoping hell pull through. These other eggs need to hurry out to keep this guy company.

Look it kwanza such a cutie. I have my fav one too he's looks just like yours but has white tips on his wings. Already don't mind being held.

They have such personalities one has started to peck at my hand when i try take a picture of him ...or her.
Kwanza loves his picture taken still, one loves trying to escape (Charlie). One loves his sawdust/food baths, and one albeit the smallest of the pack, owns EVERYTHING, if he wants food nobody touches it or he pecks at their feet to get away. But when he wants to snuggle up to the rest they have to allow him to. Right little bossy bugger!

I have moved them from the brooder, completely off of heat (a little soon i thought but they are doing amazing without it and circumstances meant i had to!) but as they are inside now and they are now sharing a cage with my pet Cockatiel! It is very warm in my house anyway (Until i get the quail cages cleaned out....been a LONG time since i used them.)

They are separated (very high cage) He seems to not mind them being there and he never used the bottom part of the cage anyway, so all i did was higher the floor grid and now it has become two cages stacked.

It is also helping get the quails used to him when he screams away for attention (and vice versa when they do!) The other chicks are doing really well too, but these four i am in love with, and with any luck i will have two of each gender...or only one male. If so i will be keeping them all. (Starting to think the majority are male though -eek!-) If so, i will have to get rid of a few. I don't think i could part with Kwanza though. Or the little bully Vaike. Be great if One was female and the other male..

I hope your early little guy pulls through okay!

I have a pet cockatiel too! Along with a sun conure named Charlie lol and a lovebird. 2 silkies as a house pet and then now 13 buttons. It is so funny how each has so much personality. Yours must be big with lots of feathers now. Mines are growing in their wings and man do they have an appetite lol. Sadly the one hatchling that came 2 days early isn't looking to well. I was able to get good in him making a mush with water and pellets but now he is just to weak to even open his mouth to eat. So sad! This will be my first chick that didn't make it.

But other than that poor fellow, the rest is doing great! My male has found another mate but she's too young and not even laying yet. But they been mating like crazy lol so when she starts laying again then more eggs in the bator for me.

Aww poor birdy :/

I have so many pets it is insane! Haha. I have a love bird called Peaches, and four White Silkies + 4 eggs being incubated from them. They run riot in my house when given the chance but it isn't so bad. I have two cats and two dogs currently too, and they all love each other which is great!.
I am wondering, what colour would you call Kwanza? In the following picture he's the light one.

I'm not even sure if he's actually a Japanese Quail or not now because of his colouring. He's getting lighter as he ages...or she. Unless he's the only female and that is why? I haven't a clue.

Took this picture yesterday, they're in the Cockatiel cage in this one ^
