Flock block

Quote:
It's a block of a bunch of different seeds/stuff mushed together and baked, I assume. You can usually find them at your feed store. If not, you can ask them where you might find one.

Thanks!! Might have to get some

I haven't tried flock block although I've seen it at TSC. When my girls are confined to the coop because of bad weather, I usually thrown a lot of scratch grain in there - making sure I toss it in every area of the coop. It keeps them busy all day long.

I use Uncle Jimmy's Pecker Wrecker chicken treat when I have to keep my girls in their coop/run. They love it! I hang it so it takes some work for them to get stuff off of it. It's really just a small flock block with a hook in it for hanging. You could probably make them easily yourself. It's work for them to get a lot off of it, so they still eat their pellets. Our local feed store carries it.

I bought one last winter. Guess their ok wish they were higher in protein. Just keep a bucket handy in case it rains. They could possibly get moldy if the rain gets on them. They do help keep them busy during the winter months. Saw a thread last year where people were making their own might have to look that up. My girls are locked up hawks are thick as theives here. I put a bunch of leaves in the run & throw some boss in there to keep them busy.

I bought a Purina Flock Block at TSC when I got my chickens back in October. To date, the only one who has eaten anything off it is my dog.... I had set it on the ground for a moment while cleaning the coop, and wondered why Mr. DumDum was choking....... apparently seeds and grains are a little chunky and dry to slide easily down a dog's throat.... anywho, the flock block now sits in the coop (with one corner missing). The girls use it to hop up into the nest boxes. Other than that, it's just a giant paperweight. BTW, my girls get LOTS of other treats (and lay lots of eggs), so I don't mind.

Well, I got zero eggs yesterday.....so today I took away the flock block. We'll see if putting them back on the layer pellets diet help w/ egg production. I hope it does because I hate the thought of eating store bought eggs!!

i put a flock block out for my layers when im going to be working long hours 7 days a week. it keeps my ladies from getting bored and taking out their cooped up frustrations on each other. no bare spots or missing feathers on my beauties. but they do prefer ranging. wish i didnt have to work so much. and they are eating their layer pellets fine.

I raise chickens in Fairbanks Alaska.Mostly 'red sex mix or Rhode-Island Reds'...this winter has been a cold one and the chickens are looking a little worse for wear having been cooped up for so long.BUT we have had great eggs this winter because of a cpl reasons. Neat trick is to cook them a meal - it can be rice (which they love) ,oats or oatmeal, any grain soaked in water and/or even a pan of scratch. If you add a cpl table spoons of Cayenne pepper to the mix while cooking -(they totaly ignore it when eating) it is not something they can ignore when it is pooped out--BUT !! it tends to warm thier behind and makes them much more productive with the egg laying {call it a chicken aphrodisiac if you will} It works like a charm... another benefit of this is that cayenne pepper helps to control illnesses and diseases in your coop.
It is also very important to not make any drastic changes to thier enviroment while they are in the coop... stress puts an immediate halt to the egg laying as will too much darkness also.3 dozen+ eggs a day from 43 hens and 1 rooster for most of the winter thus far... Jay
