I have a new flock block- is it an ok idea to put in coop when weather is colder? Seems quite hard- is it ok for their beaks? I am debating whether I should leave my chickens shut in the coop this coming Wednesday. Temp with windchill factored in is forecast to be around -40 F!! I think they said high temp will be -1 F without wind chill considered. Any thoughts on keeping them cooped or not/ideas to help stay warm without heating? Thanks!

I would put in flock blocks during extended bad weather, just to give them something to do. It seems hard because it's compacted plus there's usually shelled seeds in the mix, so it takes them time to break it up, that's why they can spend hours picking at it. But they're safe, just don't overfeed them flock blocks as they're more of a treat and not a feed replacement.

As far as the other question, I can't advise as I don't get temperature drops that sharp in my neck of the woods. I know there's a few threads in coops & runs where folks were talking about arctic blasts and windchill.

Flock Blocks are wonderful :)
Our girls make theirs last, though. I believe we still have one out there from a month ago.
But they free range and get lota of treats, so understandable.
