do you mean your chick had Encephalitis? chance are that's what it had if it indeed had a mosquito borne disease and it also would have had bloody poop too.
good idea to put some stuff called Pre Strike in any standing water around your place.
HOPE if you have any dogs that you keep them on heartworm preventative too, not to mention
if you have any horses that they have their vaccinations against WEE, EEE, VEE current.

Not Encephalitis according to the vet. It was definitely Avian Malaria. No dogs, nor horses, only chickens. And getting rid of standing water where we live in the Philippines is impossible. But, I take as many steps as possible to control the mosquitoes and rats. My coop is completely closed on all sides and the top. My brooder is completely covered in mosquito netting. And I have an electronic bug zapper also. It would seem that at least one mosquito got through my defenses.

Well after a week of our hen being unable to use her legs, she died over night!

I was honestly surprised to see her not breathing this morning, as she was still so perky last night!

I do feel she would never have regained the use if her legs, so it is probably for the best.

We have yet to figure out what got her that way, and even our Delaware(she was a Buckeye) who died within two days-nothing conclusive!

I wish we knew...we are still watching the remainder of our flock and hoping for the best!


? malaria ? I don't think it could have been this for us, as we are in Wisconsin...though we do have a bunch of mosquitoes! I actually have a fly or bug catcher inside the coop, which has been catching some excess bugs!... But, I guess anything is possible.

I have heard of dogs getting bit by a tick, and was told their legs go weak, and it kills them.

I guess, we will keep researching and until then may never know?

I sometimes wonder if one particular breed of chicken is more prone to diseases than other breeds. I'm 70 years old and have had about 10 different flocks of different breeds as well as the barn yard variety. Of all of these I have had the most loses in the Australorp flocks. The least number of losses has been in the barn yard and RIR flocks?????????? Is it possible?

Some breeds are more resistant than others. barnyard mixes are more resistant than most.

In saying that, as Avian Malaria is a parasite, it seems less likely to be selective when it comes to breed.

I agree with you on being less likely to be selective but, I think by observing the chicks that the mosquitoes can't catch the RIR.

The RIR are the most active of both breeds. They are constantly moving about and playing like little kids. While the Australorp are like teenagers with their nose stuck in a tablet playing mine craft.

I won't give up on the A's. Once I get them on the ground, I'll get with you and place another order.

not sure, but Jimmy could be correct in that certain breeds are more prone to disease, and others not as much.

Certainly, some breeds are more cold or heat tolerant, so other qualities are probably likely as well.

As Jimmy said, never stop learning! I love it!

Chickens are funny, and complicated at times as well! But, I love them!

At the fair observed some of the poultry judging...fascinating to me!

The most gorgeous Polish hen was there! Black and white feathers, alternating! COOL! The judge said she was too black feathered! Otherwise great! She got a ribbon for something, but I thought she was beautiful! However, I always wanted a Polish, but learned they aren't great layers and are not cold tolerant! So, would not have been a good choice after all for us!
