Flock/Life Journey's 2019

Egg Stats:
If Coco lays today that will be my 90th Egg!!!! :celebrate
Geezzz I love my chickens!
Yesterday Hazel and Coco swapped nesting boxes just to confuse me lol.

Further to this Update. Coco laid today! 90 eggs now.

I haven't had to wash any yet so it got me thinking do you wash with Warm or Cold water?

Chicken Update:
My ladies are free ranging at the moment. Scratching around and following me.
I cleaned out their coop, topped up their water and feed. Now just chilling while I have a beer.

Then I might treat them now or tomorrow afternoon before I go grocery shopping since there will be no free ranging tomorrow. :he

Throw Back Thursday:
WARNING! PHOTOS ARE GRAPHIC!

As today is Throw Back Thursday. I promised to share the story of my Black Australorps. This will be part 1 of the Australorp Story.

When I got my day old chicks in my last Throw Back Thursday Story. I got 3 Black Australorp Chicks.

So took them home and had them in the brooder that I raised my last chicks in. Same way. Same everything. Same lighting. Did nothing different as the first time was successful. A few days in and I find 1 Black Australorp chick dead.

I was upset and thought maybe the others hurt it and it died. As I had no idea and was still new to this chicken thing. I just thought these things happen.
Then...... 1 week week old. I wake up and another Black Australorp chick was dead! I thought nooo this isn't right. If the heat was too hot (which was unlikely as it was winter and cold as) then why only the Black Australorps. So then I shared the photo on BYC and it looks like a decease that can attack chicks when they are incubated at too high of a temperature. I can't remember what its called.

I then called the breeder and told them what had happened and that this is the advice I have received about it.
The breeder not happy with me agrees to replace the 2 chicks with 2 new chicks. I thought ok thats fair (not expecting anything just to give them the heads up that they might want to look at the issue).

I then picked up the 2 new Black Australorps. This is where my nightmare really come true.
One of the chicks looked unwell. I showed my partner its belly and he said omg I hope this isn't going to happen again. Anyways the next day I noticed the chick being tired and not going to the toilet.

I then noticed Pasty Butt! Well that's what I had thought it was.

I cleaned the chick up and put cream on the open wound and made a brooder inside for it to monitor it. The next day it seemed ok when I left for work and my partner send me a video it was chirping and seemed normal.
I got home from work and tried to pick the chick up. It was attacking me and making this screaming chirp. I let it calm down then tried again. Nope same thing. I picked it up and its belly was soooo big! And gullet was massive and it hadn't gone to the toilet much. The part that had poop oozing out looked like its belly button not its butt. Im then crying not knowing what to do with it. My partner then walks in the front door 3 hours early from work. Thank god. He came to me and said whats wrong and I showed him and told him. So I have this chick in my hand and im crying my eyes out not knowing what to do! My partner says you know what we need to do right?
I start screaming nooo nooo nooo this isn't fair! And he took the chick and had to humanely cull it.

I had a shower and was crying and screaming. My partner then comes into me in the shower and looked devastated too but held me while im wet and dressed me and cuddled me to sleep. I was beside myself! I never wanted chicks again!

Omg that was hard to tell!

Next week ill tell you all about the remaining 2 Black Australorps.
