Hi Kasandra, lovely to meet you.

My Runner ducks are finding this cold period we're having very hard. It's in the minus' at the moment. This morning I woke to everything iced over and thick frost on the ground. Runners are not hardy when it comes to cold and my poor drakes were shivering and finding hard to walk on the frost (We have wood chips on the floor of the run but they insisted on coming out into the garden) I put cardboard down for all to use to sit on and made a walk way from their pools to food and water, which makes it easier for them to walk. The cardboard is enough for the chickens and my two Khaki Campbell's but wasn't enough for the drakes, who were shivering loads, so I ended up putting out a blanket on the ground and a duvet as well which did the trick, they snuggled up on those until the sun came out, which brought the temps up enough for them to go foraging. It's almost 5 pm now and I've decided I'll put the ducks to bed a bit earlier as temps are dropping again rapidly.
I made a big error this morning too which I feel so bad about. While I was filling their pools some of the water splashed and sprayed over the side, I saw my RIR near me but she had managed to get out the way so didn't get wet, what I didn't realise was my Buff Orp was behind one of the garden chairs, I can only think the water must have hit the chair and wet her but I hadn't realised, then sometime after I sat down and she came over to me, I thought she looked a bit shiney but I didn't have my glasses on and thought it was just a reflection from the yard light I use for them until it gets light out here. I noticed she was very quiet and had all her feathers puffed up, it puzzled my because BO's are one of the hardiest when it comes to cold because of their thick plumage. I went indoors to get my birds some banana and on my way out I noticed my BO standing just inside the door which is something she never does, it is then I realised the 'shiney wasn't a reflection she was covered in frost! Obviously she must have got hit by the stray water and it iced up on her, she had been this was for over an hour! Naturally as soon as I realised I got her indoors with us and dried her off, she's fine thank goodness but I've realised we got away with it because she is a BO and has such a thick plumage and belive if it had of been one of my others we could have been in big trouble. I cried it was awful, I still feel so bad about it, still makes me tear up thinking about my poor girl freezing like that. Stupid mistakes can lead to tragedies, mine was a very stupid mistake and I am so thankful she is ok.
On a lighter note, every one is doing fine, and I 've added even more bedding to the duck house to make sure they get plenty of warmth during the night. My four ducks are at this moment snuggling up on the duvet, so cutenow going to put them to bed, but going to let the chickens stay out longer as they aren't really bothered by the cold so far.
Well, I got really lucky last night. Yesterday was mostly 12C-13C and pouring rain, when the sun went down it dropped to -4C. I was terrified that I'd lose a ton of birds, but only lost one who chose not to snuggle up with the others.
Normally, when it's cold and wet, they'll stay under shelter to stay dry, but when it's warm and wet they're out foraging away and don't mind getting soaked. We put them to bed early yesterday in hopes they could get dried out before the temps plummeted. That may have helped. But temps dropped really fast, and of course the really cold wind out of the north at 18Kmh didn't help.
