Flock/Life Journey's 2019

Well I've built the new enclosure and just have to get the gate on. Then they'll be back outside. I lost 350 pounds of pork when the boar got away and got hit by a car. Thankfully I didn't have to pay the car repairs. They aren't even the types of hogs we want to raise, but came at a great price and gave us an opportunity to learn. Lesson 1: They are incredibly intelligent and escape artists.
I hope you get to butcher some this summer!

Weather Update:
Pelting down rain at work but that doesnt mean it like this at home :he
Hopefully that will stop some customers coming in.
No rain here but it is threatening.

I hope you get some rain ant home!

Flock Update:

I found out my chicks are just fine! :woot What i was seeing was the cecal poo mixed with regular :ya

So i was making a new wood cage for my quails but that I don't have them i took that cage tipped it on it's side and made a "chick play pen". They needed a moment to like it at first but as soon as i put Ketchup in with them they realized that they could scratch and eat the bugs!!! :jumpy:bun

And then the fun part... getting these guys back into the other cage! :thWe had GT, Sesame,Soy,Crispy,Sour, and Ketchup out in the pen... we were able to get all but Crispy and Ketchup out easily. Those two escaped and the chase was on! Unfortunately Crispy got pinned by our dog who magically showed up:barnie I checked her over and looks like she just got slobber and some ruffled feathers but I'll be watching her. We found Ketchup under my car and then she led us on a chase around the backyard.... :he:th.

I think I've had my exercise for the next year!!!! I'm going to have to figure out a safer way to get them out. They're all still hand shy :hit

Another great Update honey. :pop:goodpost:

The little pen looks really great for them. I might have to pinch your pen idea. When I have chicks I just let them out to peck around but me, Jordan and Tank would keep them close to their brooder but we no longer have Tank so might be harder next time round.

Flock Questions?
Coco has always laid in the nesting box. She has got a favorite one but since Almond has started laying. Coco has been laying in random places. Down in the run, in the roost next to the nesting boxes.
Has anyone seen this behavior before? Is she upset?

Some hens can become quite possessive of their favourite nesting box & will send any other contenders packing. Broody hens are particularly bad. Sometimes the lowest in the pecking order can have trouble getting nest time, even though most hens will share. I only have trouble if someone is broody & then I get random eggs in random places because Miss Broody just won't share with anyone!

Shes 2nd in the pecking order. Hazel is the top pullet but she shares and always has. Its funny though her eggs have been the first of the day. No other chickens in the boxes.
