Flock/Life Journey's 2019

I keep hearing that hens go broody often... I've had my sussex for several months now and notta! I'm kinda bummed... maybe when more start laying she might go broody?
You hear about hens going broody a lot but if you have high egg laying hens from a hatchery, They are not as likely to go broody. The broodiest I have had were breeder quality hens

Ah the Paradise fire..I have friends in Live Oak near Yuba City, they knew a lot of people who lost just about everything if they didn’t lose their lives. One of their nephews was a fire fighter in that fire, he was OK. I visited them last summer and was going to visit them when I was in California in March but I didn’t want them to have to worry about visitors that soon after, plus DS could barely stand being in the car an hour let alone the nearly 3 hours it would’ve taken us to drive up there from my mom’s. My friend who shares my birthday, as does her daughter, she said Paradise was a beautiful city.

Well anyway I went to the feed store to get more feed for my button quail including a protein substitute but they said I can just feed them duck starter which contains the 22% protein I needed for them. They said turkey starter is higher in protein but is medicated so they said best not to go with that so duck starter it is. For bedding they ran out of coarse pine so we ordered 3.6 cubic feet of fine pine shavings thinking it couldn’t be that big since it was only about $8. When we went to the back of the store to pick it up it was huge. Then I thought about how the button quail would have a problem breathing fine pine shavings especially for that long so we returned it. We still have a small bag of regular pine shavings at home. I found out aspen shavings is ok too just not cedar.
I am using starter like that for my coturnix quail. I gave them egg layer vitamins today to see how that works for them

Duck/water fowl starter works well with quail. Quail, Water Fowl and Turkeys require higher levels of niacin, meth and protein. Turkeys even higher than the others.

Good evening all,
Nature is not on the hen Jazzy's side. In less than two weeks, she's had a swollen pecked eye, ticks on her face, still being broody and finding dead worms (roundworms?) in her poop. DE and ACV is everywhere and she's separated, don't worry.
DE and ACV Will not kill worms. Please get a wormer that works and treat her and the entire flock.

If your child or pet Dog or cat had worms, how would you treat them?

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Thank you! I hope to get VermX for them all tomorrow-no other hen shows signs of worm atm luckily.

If you see any worms in poo, it is a heavy load. For now, assume all of them have worms. Since we are at the summer solstice, wait until Fall and send in a sample of poo for a fecal float test. If the test shows worms, treat the flock again then.

It might take some time to get it under control or it is possible that they will need to be treated regularly because of there being a lot of worms in your area.

DE will never kill worms. ACV can increase health and let them live better with worms but will not kill them either.
