I dont have the experience many here do but we decided to brood our new chicks in the coop with a chicken wire divider...our big girls are admittedly a little crowded in the coop atm but they get outside enough that it hasnt been a problem the result is we were able to let the 2week olds free range today (supervised by us ofcourse) for a good length of time with the main flock...there was minimal bullying by one particular hen but our roo was on top of her each time she did try to be a bully..it was a neat sight...again our chicks by 8weeks will have been within sight if not contact of the main flock for weeks by the time we let them stay integrated....it worked for us atleast so far even though we are several weeks from full time integration we feel these short visits to general population will help later immensely...

I have a broody hen in a largish cage with 1x1 wire. Yesterday I needed a place to put a group of fairly young chicks, and decided to see if she would share space as SHE wasn;t getting off htat nest and there as a whole heck of a lot of room left. Last night the chicks cuddled under her, and today she occasionally clucked at them, but she's not bidging from those eggs, and not bothered by the chicks at all. Who'd a thunk?

Flock rations tend to be LOWER in protein...are you thinking gamebird rations?

Purina Flock Raiser = 20% protein, Start & Grow = 18%, and Layena = 16%. So while flock Raiser may not be as high protein as gamebird (23%

), it is definitely higher than chicken-only feed.

NevadaRon,

A lot will depend on the brand and type.

Starter/ Grower -

Kent Feed - starter/ grower is 20% protein
Kalmbach Feed - starter/ grower is 21% protein
Buckeye Feed - starter/ grower is 20% protein

Game Bird -

Kent Feed - starter/ grower is 22% and 28% protein
• breeder - 17% protein
• maintenance - 16% protein
Kalmbach Feed - breeder is only 18% protein
Buckeye Feed - 20% protein

chickie<3,

Not knowing what you have available around you but if you would like to go with the "flock type" feed you could also get

Kent feeds -
Home Fresh 27 Poultry (a "flock type" feed that is 27% protein) or
Buckeye feeds -
Big 4 (a "flock type" feed that is 20% protein)

You could also use a 20% non-medicated starter/ grower I fed that for sometime and the birds did great..

Chris

I use Flock Raiser for all of my birds, from chicks to adults adding Layena for the layers so they can have extra protein along with calcium that Layena provides.

I feed 1 bag of Medicated Start and Grow to chicks. When it's gone, everybody is on Flock Raiser. Chickens, guineas, quail. I have big beautiful birds and some of the purtiest eggs!!
