Flock

You could always do a smaller rooster flock a good distance away from the existing flock, but some people think its more work, roosters are useless, Etc. I know someone who just go chickens and has a rooster flock, she loves it!
I don't think I've the space or resource to fully manage this, plus my concern about noise wouldn't be alleviated.

you could post pictures of them if you wanted to be sure, but RIR's are pretty easy to tell gender. Never had a Sussex though.

What are your views on a rooster collar?

No personal experience, but from reading what other people say:
--sometimes it makes the crowing quieter
--the rooster still does crow, and it's never completely quiet
--too tight and you kill the rooster
--too loose and the rooster crows as loud as ever

Some people get it adjusted in a way that leaves their rooster alive and apparently happy and healthy, but it makes the crowing enough quieter to work for them. Some other people find that the rooster is still too loud, and some people have dead roosters and warn everyone else about the dangers.

This is always what I worry about with the collars! Or it getting caught on something, and the rooster not being strong enough to break away. I always worry they will strangle themselves!
