Floods

I made the mistake of turning on the Weather Channel. OMG am I so grateful I have a full cupboard, giant buckets of wholewheat and barley and both roosters and hens at the moment. If I'm cut off from the whole world, I'm still safe! (I even have three extra bedrooms to breed chickens for food if I REALLY have to... hahaha)

Oh man... videos of trucks just being washed down roads at breakneck speeds with roof-high water.

I'm getting scared.

That makes our 7 inches of snow in Kansas, USA, look pretty puny. My thoughts are with you. Glad you can take your babies in.

Everybody I'm really scared.... My husband told me I should buy some more flour and the shops are just INSANE. CHAOS. Turns out all the surrounding markets have been evacuated - two towns away has been evacuated.

I am RIGHT on top of a very large hill THANK GOODNESS I'm even on top of a hill on TOP of the hill... I've issued a warning to my friends that I'm a safe house.

OMG. I am so so so so so so lucky to have all this food stored up!!!! And bandages! And medicine!! I'm going to spend the rest of the arvo filling all the SPARE WATER BOTTLES I KEEP ON HAND (THANK GOODNESS!) so I can put them all in the freezer/cupboards to keep everything in lockdown.

I've even put two hens with my roo just in case stuff REALLY hits the fan.

I was just reading an article on the net about Brisbane. Very frightening. Please keep us informed that you are safe. It sounds like you have a good plan. Ironic isn't it that with all that water, having clean drinking water could become a real problem.

oh goodness elizabethbinary!! please stay safe and inside!! as much as you can! great job keeping the chooks safe

make sure you all do as well. i have not heard any of this - being on the most isolated islands in the world sort of keeps me out of the loop - but i can imagine how scary it is! being on an island an all - yours is much bigger!! but if the boats were to stop coming or we had a major issue here things would get tough quick!! get what you need and stay out of the stores - if the flooding gets worse - so will the panic! stay home! get your hubby home with you and your chickens/ducks!! start baking - i know you love to do that!! and yes water lots of water!! is there a fresh water source/spring near you?? we have been learning where the fresh water sources are on our island just incase! please stay safe and keep us updated!!

try not to be too scared!! we are here for you! dont panic! i will be checking back all night if you need me! its only just after 5pm hawaii standard time so ill be here for the rest of the night and probably in the middle of the night when there is barely anyone here on the account of my 1yr who wont let me sleep!!

You still have internet and power... That is very encouraging :-) Keep your spirits high... and if you get frightened.... dance! :-)

My goodness aren't you all just the nicest people in the world? YES I am so grateful I have internet and power right now!! I'm using it while I can. My internet is satellite thank goodness.

I've put away about 40L of water already - I've got room for another 40-60 yet, so 100L.... 20 gallons about?

We should be safe! My husband is at work and can't drive but we thought it would be safest if he pushbikes home believe it or not! The roads are WAY worse than the surface paths he can take on his pushbike.

I've been baking lots and lots of bread - the whole town is out of it, interestingly. I bought 20kg of flour at the shops... everyone else bought bread. Guess who's is gonna last longer for the same price??? Yeah

I was the only one smart enough to stock up on oil too... weird

Everyone else bought out the eggs.... I just kinda laughed.

YES I DO KNOW WHERE TO GET FRESH WATER! thank you for mentioning that because I didn't even THINK of it. There's a dam with a causeway near us I can get to using the back/high roads. Brilliant!

I am so glad that you have been thinking and preparing ahead. Our town flooded in 2007. Took out our schools, Medical center, Grocery store and all of our business district. Since then we have "drills" for the schools and the rest of the town to prepare for any type of disaster. I am glad that you have the basic staples for food and a source of drinking water, hopefully you also have a reliable source of heat. If your friends or neighbors need to come to you as a safe house I hope that they will be forward thinking and bring as many supplies as they can so yours are not depleted. It took our town 2 weeks to get electricity back and almost a month for the roads to be cleared. We are in the remote mountains with just one road in, it was almost a week for the national guard to bring their trucks in. only helicopters in and out. Even with all that once we knew all our elders were accounted for we partnered up with folks that had wood heat and told stories and played games at night after we had worked to clean the town all day. Those with musical instruments played and folks sang. We have kept up with all of the self entertaining even now and it has made our town all the richer for it!
As prepared as you are you will be fine

If the storm passes, just think, you will have bread for the next 2 weeks!!! Many Blessings on you and yours tonight!

Oh my goodness, I'm glad you had a lot of things prepared! That will be so welcome, in case you get refugees. You keep safe, be real careful walking on that softened ground.

For the chickens, maybe you can stack a few pallets, with the stack wedged into a corner or against something? I'm wondering if a single pallet will sink into the mud. It's awful that you have to throw something together in a storm!

Drink something hot when you come in!
