Hey all, newbie here. So, a Floridian bunch, huh? Are transplants welcomed? Been in Tampa over 7 yrs now but my honey is native. Maybe I can sneak in under her apron...

Real quick question, since the outside temp is 85-90 with loads of ack humidity, can we think about moving the girls to their coop or is my son might maybe sleeping on the couch a bit longer? Memory tells me when the brooder matches the outside temp, they're good to move but honey is fluffing her "feathers" at the thought of her babies moving out into the great big outdoors.
I'd appreciate any advice, Thanks

By the way

That roosters a monster beaut!

Hi @chickrunfun , I welcomed you over on the newbie forum but I can't remember how old you said your chicks were. If they're pretty well feathered out, I would say it's ok. You may have to convince your honey she can go out and see them any time she wants, lol.

Transplants better be welcome because I'm one too! I don't think there will be a problem

Hey NorthFlChick...I'm Will, yall can call me WJ. Thanks for the QUICK response. Babes are all 4 weeks old, save for Thumbelina, she's hitting 3 weeks. My son's a good sport but he's been booted out of his corner of the house for 3 weeks now and sure would like his boudoir back. Just checked the weather and we're in for another long run of thunderstorms and rain so I think I may have to set the chickidoos in the family room. I just know honey won't stand for the babes to go to the coop. It's a GOOD coop, practically a mansion! I got a little carried away building it...heh. Been awhile since I had a project.
I saw in the gallery someones by the handle "cmom" got their set up REAL NICE in the house, so thinks that's the ticket.
Thanks again!

Good luck and have fun...
I have my setup in an apartment I have. I use it for company when they come otherwise I use it as a hatchery. I have a coop I put my chicks in.
I renovated the chick/grow-out coop this year and divided it. In years past I put large watermelon boxes on each side with wire on top of them and cut a hole in the boxes so the chicks could go in and out of their pop doors. There is a pop door on each side of their coop.

I do put a heat lamp on for the chicks especially at night when they are little but at 3/4 weeks they should be starting to get their feathers. I put the heat lamp so they can get some heat or move around the coop for their comfort. I have been doing this for a lot of years so over the years I have changed or modified this and that until I have things the way I want them.

Welcome! I have been keeping my babies in my very warm garage without a light at all after the first few days/nights.

For your chicks, it is my suggestion to acclimate them somehow to the 'great outdoors', either by taking them outside during the day and bringing them back in at dusk OR put them in the garage as a transitioning to the temp changes. The next few days of rain should be plenty of time for them to adjust. Then, with wife's permission

you can move them outside to the coop. Just be sure your coop and run is like Fort Knox against predators and you check them several times a day, minimum. (hope you like my humorous emodicon) LOL

Here are some chicks that need to be moved out to a coop but they are about 3 weeks younger than the rest so they are in cages for now and I take them out into the yard to a temporary pen. They go into the garage at night and there is another large cage in the garage that I put this one next to so they have more space and they an go from one cage to another. Before I built the cages I used large watermelon boxes and cut a hole in one side as a pop door. I only cut 3 sides for the hole so I could close it. I hope this is a help to those that are just starting out with chicks.

It was cool out at the time as this was a few years ago, so I put this sheet over the box to help keep some heat in it with a heat lamp but had it so the sheet couldn't touch the lamp. The lamp sat on top of the wire.

Hey cmon! Great pictures! All chickabees are set up in the family room. They seem happy as can be, Marilyn and Jean keep wanting to "fly" (more like, jump with attitude) to the window ledge for a peek outside. Heat lamp is over their "bed" and I just gave a looksee and they're all cuddled up and dead to the world! My honey will be pleased they stay inside...with a trip to the compost pile hopefully this weekend if weather allows. It's chuck full of lil' bugs and worms and I know they will go ape crazy on their first "picnic"
To Bean789: Fort Knox is just what it is! Still have to finish the bottom of the run but I opted for a Galvanized Steel Hardware Cloth with 1/2 inch mesh size all around...floor/ground cover included. Unless some critter has wire cutters, no way they getting in! Way more $$ but I am not loosing one chick if I can help it!
And on the "wife's permission" HA! I don't need her permission! I just need to say so....heh...after all, she does keeps me in bourbon!
