So, we are almost done with our chicken run. We are just so busy this week and next, we have to find a temp solution before we do a full on coop. The coop is coming in a month or so, I think. Right now, we are going to put the dog crate in the chicken run, and close the chicks up at night in the dog crate like I have been.

Or do like I did.... Turned a horse stall into a coop. The horses are out most of the time anyway. The only thing bad about that was I then turned another one into a coop. Good thing I only have a 3 stall barn. And the other one is for my hay storage.

I have had my current chickens over a year, and they still don't have a coop. I just have them in dog pens with boards for roosts and free nest boxes that I picked up at the local produce stand. The geese have the same arrangement, but with a large dog kennel for a nesting box. The ducks are the only ones with a real coop. I haven't lost one of them yet, and they like the ventilation the open pen provides. I found all of the pens used on craigslist, Very small investment that has worked out well.

Thanks everyone for your tips on ducks. I have been working all week on cleaning out a stall that I used for storage. Put in a auto waterer, sprayed, cleaned, put in a poop door, divided the run and put down shavings. Got the Aussies all moved and forgot to put wire at the top of the door. Oooops. Only the outside and the end stall doors are double. The rest are half doors. My alarm chickens were giving me static the whole time I was pounding away. You'd think it was their barn. LOL I'll post pics tomorrow. I just got finished and I'm beat.
