I had my last 2 roos separate, and they got so lonely that I came out and found them both in the same pen. I guess they decided eachother was better than alone.

Cmom, that's a great bachelor pen! I'm into doing the same thing.

That makes a lot of sense, good idea! Shavings decompose, give off heat in the process, so sand would be cooler! I have open air coops myself and no predator problems, but I may switch to sand the next time it's time to clean them out completely! I bet they will like to lay in it too, to cool off, like welasharon says.

I would just recommend that come late September that you replace the shavings to start building up for the winter. I starting building up my coops last fall and the girls were all much warmer and better insulated come December.

I allow comb bruising and pecked blood, nothing is allowed to be bleeding in three minutes after the fight-

They redo it each spring, (so far) One the Ameraucana Fiesta is 4 years, the Marans- Reeder is 3 years and the Brahma -'Mr White' is one year old.

It looks like the pavers that are used for drives and parking spots.
I so wish I had a nice covered pen like that!

the floor in the dry side is PT- pine at - the floor of the rest of the run is vinyl lattice panels form the big box stores- HD and Lowes have them- they are overlapped and under the frame of the coop- it makes cleaning easy and can be wet to cool the pen

No, it hoses off, there is sugar sand underneath that. (like play sand or construction sand but free- it's what's FL is made from). The land is set to drain towards the rear corner. I've done some work and need new picts.
