Hi - Im in weeki Wachee -
Im just getting started, trying to figure out the right size coup - 2 or 4 chickens , which are the best chickens for newbie etc...
My husband is not a huge fan of the idea, we have a little over 2 acres so we have the room, but he says they are dirty and noisey, im sure there have to be some quiter cleaner ones out there? I want to make this as successfull as possiable to avoid the 'I told you so's", lol

Any advice would be a great help - Also looking for local hatcherys, because im preety sure id like to start with 8wk old birds not new hatchings.

Yes chickens can be messy but as long as you keep on top of it there shouldn't be a problem. I would look into getting or building a chicken tractor so that they can easily be moved around to different areas of your property. Remember that chickens make some of the best organic fertilizer around.

Go to the shows coming up and see the different types of chickens and eggs that are available. I started off with a mix and now I will be looking for homes or just let some free range as I think I am going to stay with marens and BLRW.

Would definitely recommend starting with day old chicks. Older birds have more chance of being exposed to illnesses and I have yet to see someone selling older birds with a health guarantee. You're pretty safe with day-olds, and esp if you are only going to have a few you can socialize them and get them used to you. Much harder to do with 8 week olds.
