FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Welcome from just down the road a piece in Baker (near Crestview)! Are you in the city limits of Pensacola? Do they allow chickens in the city? Okaloosa county is struggling to come up with a chicken ordinance that will allow hens in residential areas. Haven't we had fun with the weather the last few weeks! From 18 one night to over 70 yesterday afternoon!

I grew up in FWB so I know very well where Baker is. I actually live in Cantonment but from what I understand a limited number of chickens are allowed in the Pensacola city limits. No one else in the family has chickens but they keep telling me briefly about the Okaloosa county fight. Do you know the progress. I'm glad we that live in the sticks don't have to deal with things like that. Nice to meet you also.

Simone is on some of the FB chicken pages, are you on any of them?

Yes, I am on several of the Hernando and Pasco County pages as well as Florida pages. I am picking up hatching eggs from Simone this evening. WooHoo!

I was looking for other breeders that people might use who would have a new generation not related to Simone's. Still learning and this will be my first hatch. Genetic, lines, generations, etc. Mind boggling!

I know that our favorite County Commissioner, Nathan Boyles, is spearheading the efforts, but it is moving at the speed of government! So you're the first crazy chicken person in the family...good for you!

I'm in Sebastian, and have a Facebook page called Sebastian Backyard Chickens, but it's mostly for anyone in Indian River County who would like to join. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SebastianBackyardChickens/ It's an informal group started to help out locals, since we don't have a local vet who see chickens. Anyway, you are welcome to join our little group. You won't be bombarded with posts.

We also have a Facebook swap meet page for all Floridians and Georgia too.

Yes, the birds need to be pure breeds not hatchery birds and recognized by the American Poultry Association. If the birds are bantams the breeds need to be recognized by the American Bantam Association. Even if you don't enter any birds it is always a great experience to go and see the different birds that are entered.

Not that I will get rid of my birds for a contest, but how do I get a pure breed bird?

To me, it's more than a contest. Many people have been breeding birds for show (Show Quality) for many years. Since it appears you have never been to a show maybe you should go the first time as an observer and look at the birds people are showing. Also you may be able to buy a bird there that you may be interested in showing in the future. A few years ago I raised Buff Orpingtons. A young girl bought a cockerel from me at a fall show and at the next spring show, she showed him and she won the juniors class with him.
