pantjes.. I think that it would be better to have a vet come and artificial insiminate her. it would be cheaper than to have a bull and feed him for a whole year only to be used once a year, that's only what i would do.

30 days to go and there are already alot of people interested in the swap, I get at least 8 e-mails a day asking where and when it is, and a couple of them ore bringing some Plants and Rabbits, beforyou know it i'll be here

For those interested in milking Dexters, I also have a few bred cows for sale. They are due to calve in Sept/Oct. Just give me enough time so I can get their health papers together and handle them a bit. The bred cows are out on pasture right now but they have worn halters before. They will need a refresher. Best to plan to handle them extensively once you get them home. I can put halters on them and work with them a little before the sale but you'll need a way to catch them so you can handle them until they are easy to catch in the field. They love alfalfa pellets as treats. Cows are funny with new people, especially if they have been out free in a pasture raising their babies. Dexters tame up easily to new owners, though.

I have never owned cattle. But am very intrested in cows for milk and well food, love steak! Now I have to talk hubby into it. We don't have a heck of a lot of property only 3 acres, we downsized. Is this enough for a cow?

AI can be expensive. Ask your local large animal vet. The techs have to come out several times and the conception rate is about 60%. Live cover is much easier. We will be getting a new bull and we would offer his services to outside cows. We prefer to have the cow come stay with him for about 30 days. I believe it would be cheaper than AI. All that is required is a clean breeding exam from your vet. There may be other Dexter breeders offering the same thing. Just don't breed a Dexter to a standard sized bull. The calf could get too big.
