Florida Farmers Wasting Food!!!!!

That was irresponsible journalism in action there. "Let's go ask a bunch of homeless guys how they feel about an agri-economic issue. That should sell some air time."

very true,... I agree..
But i still say that they should have offered those people a chance to work the farm and pick their own berries..instead of just destroying them... just my berry deprived opinion though...

Guest room's open and I have a pressure cooker, wanna make jam?

Be right over. I don't think 100 pounds of berries would last long with me and your little ones.

Honey that's not just FL farmers! Just because one state is reported on don't think it's the only place it happens! That's just ignorant! If it cost more to harvest and take to market than what they would make how does is make since to harvest it? Yes it is food, Yes it does make us ALL angry that it is being wasted. BUT are there any other options in place for the farmer? And anyway OUR FL STRAWBERRIES are the BEST!!! your loss...

It is what farmers must do.

You want to see some real waste. Drive behind any restaurant and take
a peek at the dumpsters of food thrown away. If one wishes to chastise
them then by all means boycott all the restaurants in town too.

I beg to differ, Ontario strawberries are the best;) I`m personally willing to by strawberiies by the clam shells at 2.50 each just for eating and canning as normally they are as high as 3.50 lately though they are 1.50 and I have boughten lots, will be making more jam soon. Why couldn`t the florida farmers sell them to a processing plant? It's just like our local water, we are conserving water so now we have to pay more. I bet due to the farmer distroying crops the strawberries will go up in price.

Sigh. I understand the farmers point of view. It IS tough.
That said, if individual farmers want someone to WORK for food, I dont see anything wrong with that.
But its their call.

In my opinion, we should all buy strawberries from our own state, not hate on farmers so far away!
Living here in Connecticut, I will wait for that nice summer harvest!

Crops go to "waste" as fertilizers to themselves all the time when it costs more to pick, clean, package, and ship the goods than the farmer can get for the food. Why would you spend $1 to get paid 50 cents? You are out of your time and money that way. I find it awesome that some farmers let people u-pick, but watching some people at these u-picks picking and not taking stuff to pay for it or damaging the plants in the process can be pretty aggravating as even just a bystander.
