Foamy eye...UPDATE: Fowlpox? Help!

Another update- eye is swollen now, I caught him scratching it with his foot. Still no nasal discharge but I put a small cone around his head to keep him from scratching at his eye. He hates it about as much as I predicted.

I separated him from the other chick to be safe, and I still have no idea what is wrong with him. Any advice would be extremely valuable right now.

Foamy eyes, could be MG/CRD. If so, they will be carriers and any new birds you bring in, more than likely will contract the disease.

I was just going to post the same thing. Take those chickens back! Disinfect !Then do it again. Do you have other birds? If so do not let them near the infected ones nor near where you had those two. If it is MG even if it gets over it ,it can and will infect the rest of your flock. Don't take the chance.Take both right back where you got them. It is always better safe than sorry. With MG you are advised to either cull your flock if not then to close your flock.

Well, only one of them is sick - the other is acting totally normal. These are our first birds.

...I'm actually beginning to suspect it's Psittacosis. I woke up this morning with a fever and muscle pain. I seriously feel like I got hit by a truck. I'm so glad we don't have our african grey anymore, I'd hate to get more animals sick.

I'm going to phone the lady I got them from after I phone the vet, because I would like to know if I got bird chlamydia.

edit: Ok, found out one of my other friends is experience flu symptoms, might just be something going around. Also, the lady doesn't seem to want to take them back now. She claims the white one has 'chicken pops', caused by a mosquito bite on the eyelid, and that if I treat the surrounding tissue with iodine it should get over it.

Why me?

It's fowl pox and unless it has turned into wet pox I highly doubt this is the issue. Fowl pox will generally show up as black dots on the combs, do you see any of those?

No, I checked for black dots because I was worried it might be fowl pox but I didn't see anything. Granted, they're silkies, so I imagine that would make it harder to see/diagnose.

He did have weird scabs on his legs, I thought that that was leg mites? I guess I could have been wrong.

However, I can order the fowl pox vaccine and administer it to the other chick just to be safe? I think in Louisiana the state vet said that's the only thing small flocks need to really be vaccinated against.

TeePants, I didn't realize all of that was going on with you. Is there anything that I can help you with being as though I live close to you?

Unless you know how to get the poor guy to stop clawing his own eye, not really.

But thank you!

I tried making one of those cone collar things and he just rubbed his eye on that! I'm not sure how to keep him from making it worse, do they make those collars for birds? The one I made was still kind of scratchy so I think I'd need a plastic one.

I'm going to keep checking him for pox sores. For now he's isolated and I'm treating the eye.

Edit: I took the collar off, but here is him being pathetic in it. He really was not happy with this collar development.

Might have to put it back on if his eye looks worse from him scratching at it.

Ok, I found some little scabbies on his feet. They're black. Could this be fowl pox? Thanks! Need to know ASAP so I can order the vaccine and jab the other chick.

I can't get a good photo of his feet because they're so dark, sorry.

edit: Rather be safe than sorry, just going to order the vaccine anyway. I'm assuming the sick chick doesn't get the jab as it's already infected?

We're keeping them in separate areas btw, and I can easily throw out anything they've come in contact with. We should still revaccinate if we ever get more birds though, right? It says after he's had the virus that he won't become a carrier. They're inside the house so there's no risk of getting infected mosquitoes or what not.

Photos! These were a little ridiculously difficult to get, but here they are, for your viewing pleasure.

Does this look like fowl pox to anyone?
I circled one scab but it really was hard to get him to hold still, there were 2-3 other ones plus the white bulgy spots. I think it is fowl pox, which would explain the eye- probably a lesion on the eyelid. I'm going to stop administering teramycin and start putting iodine on the ones on his feet. I'm scared to try the iodine around his face because he might wipe it into his eye.

I ordered the vaccine already for the other chick, should be in by Monday.
