FOGHORN LEGHORN~ "Lookit here son, I say, I say son, did ya see that hawk after those hens? ....

That video was so sad! Especially since imho simply COVERING THE RUN would have prevented this. For Pete's sake, a predator is only following it's instincts, you as the human are supposed to PREVENT this type of thing. Makes me sick.

Years ago I had a banty rooster I call "Rooster Cogburn" because he lost an eye battling a hawk to protect his girls!!!!!! Now I have a pit bull and a golden retreiver that look up all the time and chase any large bird that flies over their yard!!!!!!!!!!

So cogburn saved his girls! YAYA!!!

Really? They can make the chickens sick? I saw one fly over a couple of weeks ago. We don't have too many of those in Central Utah, but a lot in the South. We struggle with sparrows..a lot of sparrows! They get right into the food bowls, they take baths in the water. I can't stand them here. Good luck with your crows..didn't you say you got some of those wind mill toys? I did. I am going to put them out because I'm afraid that Coopers Hawk will come back. Simple thing, but you never know what will work. Worth a try anyway.
Hey Cynthia,
If you can hang a few old CD's from the tree limbs, that helps disorient those little Cooper "you know what's!!!"

On a sunny day and a light breeze, our backyard looks like a disco-tech! Quite a light show with the reflections bouncing off the ground, the trees, the coop, the barn etc. (We have dozens hanging at different levels from the trees!)
On occasion, the reflections even catch us off guard causing us to duck or just stop and watch. It's a bit dizzy out there! The wind mills and sparkly wind chimes do well too! Looks like a party.
Doesn't seem to bother the chickens. I've been known to break out in song, "it's you're birthday, it's you're birthday, Happy Birthday! haha
Hey, if you can't beat them. . .can't join them though. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Talk to you soon.

I like Sally Sunshine's comment about the cassete tapes. There's just got to be some kind of use for them?
Hmmmm, maybe we could use the cassetes that we have and "throw them" at the hawks, crows and sparrows!! haha Target practise?

Any thing to protect our chickens!

I just took it for granted, figured that crows were everywhere! Learning something new in the BYC forum.

We have a particularly insane amount of crows in the capitol region. One for the record books (even made an article in the NY Times). It is totally surreal in the late fall/early spring, when the sunset is around 5:30. The skyline is really like something from a Hitchcock movie during the commute.

Cassette tapes....um...... the tape inside them could be strung back and forth criss and cross over the top of the pen :D
Might not hold up tho, then that would be a mess ...never mind.
