Follow me to a trip to China

May 25th Saturday

Early morning flight back home. Our airport is in Hangzhou, about 35 miles away from hometown Shaoxing.

I stopped in Hangzhou to visit a friend. Below is the starting point of the grand canal. It goes all the way to Beijing, ranging 1100 miles, supposedly the longest artificial waterway in the world. It served importance transportation purpose for more than 1000 years.

Sky is not as blue near where I live. More pollution here. Yunnan was beautiful with stunning nature.

Shaoxing wine is a rice wine, like Sake. Sake is clear color, and shaoxing wine is amber color. I only learned the other day that Shaoxing wine is basically Sake + coloring process.

The coloring is done by adding burned sugar in the end.

Shaoxing has lots of waterways. Boat was a very common transportation tool. It is pretty unique that in Shaoxing canoeing, the driver use their foot to paddle forward, and the hand is for direction. You can see this very clearly in the picture below.

The old Shaoxing looks beautiful. I love the cities that can use water as transportation !

It's nice being a tourist in your home town sometimes, you can rediscover places with a new eye.

Maybe it's too personal and complicated a question, but do you still feel like Shaoxing is your home ?

@Perris I found this on Pu er tea. There's quite a bit about fermentation, so maybe it can be of interest to you !

What a beautiful place!

May 28th (again). This is a different old town nearby (north of Shaoxing city center, closer to Hangzhou). It's called Anchang old town. It is more established, more genuine, attracts more tourists. It may not show on the pictures, but I do think it is a better place for visiting.

Pig heads!!! 😂 Anchang is famous for all kinds of cured meats. Ham, sausage, ducks, and quails are the most common. All of them use mostly soy sauce.

This is the entry. Notice the English!

Traditional carpenter! I've always been impressed how they put pieces of woods together with a metal ring to make a basin or bucket, and it does not leak.
Notice the Mao picture:rolleyes:. It was not like this 10 or 20 years ago. We are going back towards the Mao time:(.

Inside the bank. Back then, Chinese really used abacus for all calculations including multiplication and division. When I was in elementary school, part of the math class was to learn abacus and I was quite good at some point. If it's big number addition, I can calculate it faster using an abacus than a calculator.

Did other parts of the world use an abacus too, or something like this? I've never thought about it.

Quails!

My uncle, who is 79 years old, used boats as transportation to go to nearby villages for business 30 or 40 years ago. But gradually and inevitably, we filled in lots of rivers and built roads. Only some places are preserved.

Yes I do. But maybe not home exactly anymore..., more like a place I am forever attached to. It is a great place. I am lucky and proud to be born here. I love Shaoxing.
