Follow me to a trip to China

Pics
The very front is a giant pit for incense burning.

Yes they are foo dogs. Are you asking the writing on the pit? It appears to be the name of some temple, but not the one right there.
Very interesting, thank you!

The plaque next to the tree growing on/in the wall presumably relates to said tree...? Is it some kind of formal legal protection for that kind of wonderful natural-and-manmade feature (like tree preservation orders or listed building status here), or just an info panel?
Yes it is a formal protection plaque.

Reminds me that globalization happened way before the end of the 20th century. Those colonial houses are very close to the types I saw in Tenerife in the Canary islands.

I'm also interested to see how religion/s is/are very much present everywhere you go, with temples everywhere and celebrations. I was under the apparently wrong idea that repression had given it a severe blow.

I wouldn't say you were under the wrong idea. I know Buddhism counts as a religion but it never gains political power. It's a great tool of the rulers to make ordinary people submit and obey. Buddhism is no threat. In the 90s, Falungong was brutally cracked down because it was gaining power and organized. That was a religion.

I don't think you can be a real Christian here. All Christian have to be led by CCP. The highest catholic leader have to report to the party. Some American Christian, who lived in Beijing for a long time, said that he needs his passport when going to a church in Beijing because Chinese citizen is not allowed in their real church. The Christianity here seems to be another Buddhism god...

Not to mention the persecution of Muslims in Xinjiang...
