FOOD FOR THOUGHT AND DUMB GUN LAWS

States with stricter gun control laws have fewer deaths from gun-related violence.
Last year, economist Richard Florida dove deep into the correlations between gun deaths and other kinds of social indicators. Some of what he found was, perhaps, unexpected: Higher populations, more stress, more immigrants, and more mental illness were not correlated with more deaths from gun violence. But one thing he found was, perhaps, perfectly predictable: States with tighter gun control laws appear to have fewer gun-related deaths.

Which is why Chicago, L.A., NYC, and other such places are bastions of safety and peace, right? I'm calling bull on either methods or reporting of results.

Update: Link works, my bad.

One last thing ......... news papers or news organizations are not credible sources for research information. Especially where politics are involved. Neither is a single person who "dove deep" into a topic. We need non-bias sources from peer respected experts or scholarly reviewed materials to uphold our claims if we want to be taken seriously, or if we want to be properly informed and therefore prepared to make an argument.

Look up "credible sources for research" there you will find what you need.........

Example: If you are looking for information about gun control, then you might check .gov sites for
statistics related to gun ownership, laws, etc.

Sites affiliated with specific biases (non credible) on gun ownership will probably be listed a .org sites (handguncontrol.org or nrahg.org)

FOOD FOR THOUGHT AND DUMB GUN LAWS

1. Bullets and booze: In Missouri, law-abiding citizens can carry a gun while intoxicated and even fire it if "acting in se...lf-defense."

2. Child-safety lock off: In Kansas, permit holders can carry concealed weapons inside K-12 schools and at school-sponsored activities.

3. Short arm of the law: In Utah, a person under felony indictment can buy a gun, and a person charged with a violent crime may be able to retain a concealed weapon permit.

4. Nebraskans who've pled guilty to a violent crime can get a permit to carry a gun.

5. Sweet Jesus! In Louisiana, permit holders can carry concealed weapons inside houses of worship.

6. Without a trace: Virginia not only repealed a law requiring handgun vendors to submit sales records, but the state also ordered the destruction of all such previous records.
Well back to your first post.
You want it to be against the law to carry a weapon inside a school or school activities. Will that stop anyone planning to kill kids from bringing a gun ?

You don't believe in waiting for someone to be convicted before taking away their rights ?

And then again if it's illegal to carry a gun in church that will stop someone that wants to kill someone in church ?

The only reason to have records is to go and get all the guns sold. Is that the next step ?

I was correct in my assessment. The focus was only on gun-related death. Overall murder rates were completely ignored. This is just short of outright dishonesty.

Fact: Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the country; it's also a warzone.
Fact: D.C.'s crime rate was unbelievably high when it had a total gun ban; when the ban was lifted, crime rate dropped.
Fact: Connecticut has extremely tough gun laws (ranked #5 in the nation by the Brady Center), yet the Newtown shooting happened.

Quote: Both of those are fascinating pieces, thanks for posting them. Love the graph in the first paper that shows a high correlation between firearm death and voting for McCain. Also interesting about the lack of correlation between mental illness and firearm death. Also interesting that those who graduated from college and/or voted for Obama don't tend to kill people or themselves with guns.

Sorry TallChickMagnet, somehow I don't see The Washington Post, as a neutral source, for information in this issue. I'd trust the FBI figures more, and last I checked they showed that when the bad guys don't know whose got guns, they go somewhere else, to commit their crimes. Lot's of good response to this issue, thanks for bringing it up! We need to be aware, and have dialogue on issues as serious as this. Most of our politicians are more interested in their own power and re-election to do much with our benefit in mind. Thanks again for sharing all this.

If the government wanted you dead, you would be dead. There is nothing that you could do about it. You will never out gun them...

Tell that to the dictator Assad in Syria. Remember the little thing called the revolution that happened in these parts a few hundred years ago? A well motivated citizenry can accomplish much.

Because it is their job to keep us safe...they are not denying the problem, nor jumping into a rash plan of action. Smart!

The only real job that most politicians is do things to keep their job. They forge their own agenda and pass feel good ineffective laws to make themselves look good. And it is not their job to keep us safe. Being dependent on government is an inherently bad thing and is part of what ails this country today. As far a jumping into a rash plan of action, is exactly what they are doing. They were calling for more gun control before the first body was in the ground and that is sad. The dust hadn't settled and facts not gathered but here comes political grandstanding.

You can also add Boston to your list and the state of Mass. Funny how TCM and the link that is provided doesn't mention that the gun related violence is about 99% illegal guns were used. But alas facts are not important.
