I can't wait to watch Food Inc. I changed from beef to bison a few months ago, bison aren't injected with horomones and has to free-range ... we eat red meat once or twice a week. It's expensive, so we eat smaller portions and it's healthier too. I've cleaned fish, guess I could do a chicken ... got to think about that one. I plan to find someone local and start buying my milk directly, we stil have farms here in Shelton - farmers markets are doing great business here in Fairfield County, CT. Education is the key to everything - I had someone in the store yesterday tell me they like to get their meat all packaged up neatly and not think about where it came from (of course, this came from me yakking on and on about my chickens).
Our food supply isn't safe. I got interested in heritage breeds when I read that it is alot like the Irish Potato famine ... what happens when one crop or breed is used exclusively then gets hit by disease??? Potatoes, leghorns or what have you - big mistake. Whether we're talking about hybrid plants or giant white breasted turkeys that cannot reproduce naturally ... does that make sense? Does it make sense to clean your bathroom with cleaners so toxic you have to open the windews and leave the room while they work off the scum for you - I mean, is it that hard to scrub it yourself? People do this, rinse then set their babies in the bathtub that night ... don't you think it's soaking into their bodies???
Don't even get me started on the peanut allergies. I have FOUR kids ... just try making lunch to send in when nearly every one has a couple kids in the class with peanut allergies - they can't share food, have cupcakes and NO PEANUT BUTTER!!! When did all this start? Didn't most of us grow up on peanut butter? At home, I smear it on apples, celery ... just making something for a bake sale is a nightmare, have to list all the ingredients on each tray - not worth the effort.
It's crazy, and getting crazier. Doesn't help that I have a new-age shop and so people come in asking questions based on Mayan, Lakota, Hopi, Mother Shipton (etc) prophecies -- I talk to people in the military and all around the world, aboriginne, african, etc. -- the outlook is grim everywhere you look. At the end of the day, I am glad to be part of a group who is spiritually and mentally preparing outselves to do more than cope with, but to survive and THRIVE, after the inevitable changes occur. Christian, Buddhist, Pagan or what have you ... set aside religious differences, we all are united in the love of our families. And no, the world will not be destroyed. But if people don't stop using and abusing the earth, then the human herd will be thinned (whether it be through disease, shifting land masses, climate change, whatever) so life can go on. And I hate to be mean, because it really isn't my way, but all the AIG executives who live right on the coast here in Greenwich .... I don't care if they are the first to go.
Sorry I went off topic. Just read yesterday that AIG has restored all the bonuses because they are doing so well ... after getting their bailout money, that is. I'm so angry I can't see straight.
