Foot or Feet or Leg Issue

I use hydrocolloid bandaging when treating bumblefoot, I like them. Should be ok for the toe I would think, and hopefully help prevent more irritation. Since she's been walking that way for a while, and is used to it, it probably is a little uncomfortable. You may need to gradually reposition, rather than do it all at once. Just depends on how things feel, and how she feels about it. Judgement call on your part. They are sometimes VERY resistant to change of any kind, even when it's in their best interests. It may take a bit for her to get used to, and accept the splinting. If she acts odd then it's possible it could draw bullying from others, so if that happens I would put her in a wire crate in the run with the others until she adjusts and acts more normal with them on. That way they can all still see each other, but she can't get hurt.

Do you use betadine or vetericyn with the hydrocolloid bandages?

I’m going to see if I can make a sort of splint with the hydrocolloid bandages by putting one on the top of her foot and one on the bottom. Kind of how people use the medical tape for curled toes. Unless that’s a terrible idea? Then gauze and/or vet wrap around the ankle and then the splint and then more vet wrap I guess!

Her one foot seemed better and we let her go without splints for 2 days and she really regressed quickly. So slow to improve and so quick to regress. Learned my lesson on that one. I’ll need to keep splinting for a long time after improvement. Praying that we get there!

Thank you!

When I'm using them I'm usually using sugardine or plain triple antibiotic ointment. If there is no inflammation or wound, you might just try the bandage on it's own. If it seems to make things worse (they are really intended for keeping wounds moist) then I would stop using them.

Is this bumble foot? :( This is a really close up picture. I soaked it in Epsom salt and warm water and then put the antibiotic ointment on. You can see the ointment from the top of the foot view to give you an idea of where the sore and dark spots are. Also the top of her foot scales look yellow is that from being bandaged? I soaked in Epsom salt and water, put on the triple antibiotic ointment, a small hydrocolloid bandage over that area and then wrapped with vet wrap.

I did end up calling the only vet that sees chickens in my town and it’s at a vet school. They are a month booked out but said they’d call me if a spot opened up for us on the cancellation list. It does sound like it’s going to be very expensive and a month seems like a long time. I can’t give up yet though right there’s still hope? She’s eating and drinking and running around.

Could be a very early start to bumblefoot, it can happen from any wound, tiny scrape, cut, abrasion, from bacteria getting in. I would just treat as you are, with the ointment, wrap (and splint) to try to protect that spot. The hydrocollioidal bandage will also help pad that spot a little, pressure on it from how she's been walking on it may also be part of the issue. I would continue splinting and doing all you are, see how it goes. If by the time the appointment becomes available you haven't gotten much progress, or if you have gotten some, you can always reassess to see if you want/need to keep the appointment at that time.
