FOOT SUDDENLY MISSING: UPDATES with video

I would not use aspirin for a painkiller. Aspirin is a blood thinner. Any time you have a massive open wound, you avoid aspirin as to prevent further bleeding.

AttackChicken, I will definitely get a baby sock to put over her gauze.

I am also going out to get some of that Blue Cote stuff, and some more food/treats for them.

When I got home, Peep jumped down from her perch and was walking around (hopping i should say...) and her poop wasn't white and runny anymore. Hopefully she is on the mend?

Oh, and what kind of pain killer (if any?) would you all recommend? Half of an ibuprofen, maybe, chopped up in their food?

Have you done anything with their cage/coop to prevent it from happening again tonight?, Im worried that whatever did it last night will be back tonight, if I were you I would bring them Both inside for the night and see if you can't catch that critter....they will come back

I just went out and changed Peep's gauze wrap. I bought "Rooster Booster", as well as oyster shell and vitamins and electrolytes. The electrolytes I mixed into their water and some in their food, and the oyster shell is in their food (and all over the floor, thanks to Malachi). I put the "Rooster Booster" all over Malachi's toe and then ALL over Peep's foot which I wrapped back up in gauze.

I also found some "Rescue Remedy" that we have here for humans, and grapefruit extract. Do you think it would be ok to use both of those? Or would one just be fine?

I am going to go out and see what I can do about the cage...the chicken wire has holes about 1/2x1 in. if not smaller. Maybe I'll just put up cardboard around the 3 exposed sides?

I am cutting a sock down to size to wrap around the gauze also.

Thanks for all of the advice!

I just went out and hammered boards on 2 of the 3 sides that weren't covered, then I wrapped a tarp around those 2 sides and the back side. The front where the door is I left uncovered and put a beach towel on one half of it. I don't want anything getting in there!

Sounds exactly like what happened in my coop. A raccoon reaches in through a small slit in the coop and grabs whatever part of a chicken they can reach. The first time I thought the chickens were killing each other . Then one got killed when the coon chewed off her whole leg. There was blood over the outside of the door so I knew it was a predator. My poor chicken "peg" lost half her leg but survived. Now the chickens perch up out of reach, and I covered those slots with trim boards. Young chickens sometimes roost near the door on the floor, and if it has a small gap that can be fatal. Sorry about your poor chickens, hope they do ok.

They survived the night, at least! I feel like Malachi is ok, she runs around like normal. Peep wants to run, so she uses her right wing to prop her up, and then she hops around.
I changed her foot wrap and it didn't really look better than yesterday, but I am still optimistic that she will survive!

Oh and I made a video for you all, because I don't have just a digital camera. I am just explaing what I have been doing, and I show you the coop and show you the wounds.

EDIT...AGAIN: Maybe it would help if I posted the video link?

Owch that's bone! Goodness, it looks like something pulled your Peeps toe clean off! I'm thinking the floor might be the problem. Do they roost on the grating or sit up on the shelves? I don't remember seeing anything about finding blood spatters around the coop.
It sounds like you should keep doing what you are doing for wound care. If her poops are going back to normal, it likely means the pain is reducing some what as well. I'm not sure what to give for pain killers. I never have, but then I don't have a high recovery rate for these kinds of wounds either.
Need to note how content Peeps looks in that soak! I swear if she had lips she'd be smiling!
