FOOT SUDDENLY MISSING: UPDATES with video

They roost up on the little shelf, or on the side that has the board put over it, only once have I seen them lay on the grating itself. I never found blood anywhere except in the coop. And never found any toes, so something ate them.

She was so cute in the bucket, standing up on her good leg and falling asleep

I totally agree with paperdragonfarm -- you need to have a solid floor. Chickens feet will have problems on wire, plus predators can rip their toes off when they're hanging down through the wire. Hope you little Peeps recovers - that's a nasty looking foot.

I just figured since more than half of the floor is covered, that they'd be fine. I guess not! I am now on a mission to find a piece of wood to lay down on the floor of the hutch.

Soon, we'll add a closed in part at the bottom so they can run around whenI am not home, and still be safe.

You're doing a great job of caring for your chicks!
Just a few thoughts to share....rubbing alchol stings like mad, I wouldn't use anymore. And, rats will chew thru tarps and cloth so be careful. In my opinion, 1/2 in (or smaller) hardware cloth is the way to go.
Best of luck,
Janice

I am cutting the alcohol with water, and it's about 2 tablespoons to a gallon of water, so I think she'll be ok. I'd rather have it sting her a little bit than have her lose her remaining toes to infection!

I folded the tarp in half, so now the tarp is covering it 2 times on each side, and I tied it down tighter. I also put another board on the floor to minimize the places an animal could reach in.

Peep joined Malachi in the romp around the yard today for about 3 1/2 hours. She was definitely slower and laid down a lot, but if she is moving then I am happy!

It's been about a week since I last posted, and they are doing much better!

Peep still lays down a lot, but they go out everyday and hop around. Her foot is still bruised (I think? or just blood blisters...)
and a little swollen.

Malachi has gotten mean! I feel like she took over "head chicken". She doesn't let me ever touch her or anything, but I still try and pet her :p
