I'll brag about how cold it is but rarely complain. We made out okay today. The chickens and ducks were all in the shade, pets indoors with plenty of water. We were at a birthday party at Misquamicut Beach in RI. It was in the high 70s there. The ocean was freeeeezing! This place also had a heated pool so none of us were complaining. Coolers full of cold drinks, catered, aaaahhhh. Tomorrow is going to be rough after a day like that.

We went to the river yesterday and took the dogs. The river was up and swift as it has been raining a lot here and it is your typical mountain river.....cold! We bathed the dogs and tried to withstand the current a few times but it didn't take us long to head for the car. Nothing feels as good as dry, warm cotton on cold, wet skin! I love that moment when you get home and put on dry clothes. The dogs and the boys napped all evening....it tired them out completely! We're going again tomorrow!!!

Gave the chickens some frozen applesauce today and they worked on it all day long. Gave the garden a seep hose this evening after the sun hit the mountain. Put ice out for the dogs this afternoon and they look so clean and shiney from their swim yesterday (my white dog is actually white again!) We washed the car this evening and had fun spraying each other and getting wet...that feels best when its this hot.

This weather is perfect for getting in the hay, so the field next to me is permeating the house with the heavenly smell of new mown hay. I don't like the heat but it does have its compensations.....just think how good the evening breeze feels after the heat!

The boys are heading for the drive in theater and I'm going to enjoy the cool of the evening and the peace and quiet. Keep cool, y'all!

I do love winter, but will own up to occasionally complaining about the cold and even snow. Usually at the very end when it feels like it's been around long enough and we want to see our yard again....

but I never get excited about heat and humidity! I'm not sure anyone does, but I'd trade the heat for just about anything else. Like others, I tend to get crabby, and it's hard to get outside stuff done (which there is no shortage of) because of the frequent rest needed. And forget about doing any exercising, which on cooler days is a primary activity for me.

my brother joked w/me several years ago I keep moving farther north, though he's right... (I started out in the middle of the midwest and every move I've made has been north. I might end up in Canada at this rate.

we are getting storms back to back here! and my bator is on and the lights keep jumpin.. it's making me nervous i don't want my bator off

Freeze a bottle of water (soda bottle or milk jug) and put it in the coop. Keep another one in the freezer to swap out when the first one melts. It's not a lot, but is helps just a bit.

You can also set the frozen jug in a shallow pan of water and put it in the shade or inside the coop. Sometimes the chickens will stand in the cool water.

It is expected to be over 100 degrees in the Triangle area of NC tomorrow. UGH!
Wish I was in CA.

I think corn is really bad for chickens in the heat.....thats why your not supposed to feed them scratch. The high carbs makes the body have to work and it supposed to heat them up. I dont know if being frozen will balance that out....but maybe someone else will share what they think about it

Hmm...no clue. I was told by people who have been doing that for a while to do it and I've done it since I had chickens (two years +) and had no problems. I'd def. like to hear more about this because I do not want to do something bad for them when I'm trying to do the exact opposite.

Cold watermelon works too and they love it. :)

The advice for dealing with heat stress is not give any scratch grains ( incl corn) ... here are several articles I have collected and posted last year (all extension/univ and such sources) which explains why and goes into other measures and steps to take to deal with heat stress:
