For those of you don't vote....

The counties that do mandatory service do it in a different way it is not like being drafted into a war.
Finland does it for 1 year. None of those first year of service folks would ever be expected to see action. It is basic training, one can volunteer to stay and become a real soldier or go on your way to civilian life.

It is just a good way to get snot nosed kids to learn some respect, learn how to listen, and sharpen their body and mind prior to going down what ever path they are going to take. Know mind you in Finland the state pays for college, so they (the tax paying people) want to be sure who ever is going to college is going to follow though on the courses they take... No bagging off taking classes on underwater basket weaving, unless you plan on doing that for a living...

The draft we had was to serve in the Army, yes a war if one was going on, but the draft was there in peace times also.

Wow great , let follow those that started WWII.........guess you have no idea WHY Gemany and Italy can't go to WAR..The world made that mistake after WWI.........NOT AFTER WWII.......same reason Japan.........Germany and Italy

There was A fail Amendment that never made it, that anyone voting for a war had to join.

Wow, that's a good reason for saying it's a bad idea. Who says Italy and Germany can't go to war? That was true immediately after WWII. Do you think we'll stop them? They won't go to war because they don't start wars. We used to be like that too.

I'm glad they dropped the draft. Really filled up the colleges though. It was truly a war for the lower classes. If your parents could afford college you were good to go as long as you kept your grades up.

Well I see this seems to not be completely on topic anymore. Well drafts were bad but so was the way our troops were treated when they returned from Vietnam. These guys went through hell in the name of our country, and returned to be called all.sorts of things. My main thing is i dont necesarrily agree with our current position in afghanistan, but I completeky disagree with people that sit where our soldiers are returning and protest. Our troops need all of our support. They are the same people that would he defending our country if there were some kind of invasion. I say if there are going.g to be protests it needs to be in a more centralized location where the people there are making decisions to send our guys out. That way our more patriotic citizens/soldiers, can come home to welcomes they deserve for fufilling their duties and orders like they were sent to do in the first place. Coming home to hostility makes people not want to volunteer to enlist. That is couterproductive no matter what way you look at it.

can you hear me now? :

That's very true. The animosity towards our returning troops during Viet Nam was terrible. Most of the troops were drafted and very few did any of the atrocities blamed on them. Soldiers just do what they are told to do. Some people don't realize that once you're in you do as ordered. There is no choice unless it's an unlawful order. You can't just quit.

This time around the troops have everyone's support. It's just the war that isn't supported by that many.

Have you heard about that guy that goes to soldiers funerals and protests at the funerals? He does it with his group of followers for something to do with protesting gay people. He gets permits and police protection as is his right under free speech. It's an abuse of his rights but he's protected. Ironically his rights that were protected by generations of soldiers dying. Some people will do anything for publicity.

. I would love to attend a protest like that and ask them if they think they should somehow be branded so if we were ever to get invaded they would have to protect themselves. See how they like that since.they dont support our troops.
