We live in Des Moines and have 6 chicks. We're allowed to have a LOT of chickens (I believe it's up to 30 on lots less than an acre.. but that may be higher than it actually is..), probably more than we ever will. But that has more to do with our space available for the coop.

I could see us having up to 10, maybe.. but I don't know. It really is tempting to get more chicks now, but I don't want to over-do it.

I'm the same way- even thought it's so tempting to add on, until I get my country place someday I'll try to not over-do it!

We have no limit in our area, as long as they are not a nuisance, and at the moment we have 11 outside in the coop and 3 in the brooder. Sent 4 to freezer camp over the weekend. But we have to go to the feed store tomorrow, so who knows how many we'll have after that!

I ordered 8 chicks. My city limit is 12 total, and only one of them can be a rooster. They must be kept clean. My lot is only 1/4 an acre. We are sharing it with 6 rabbits, and soon 8 or 9 chickens! So excited!

I live in a little village on a .18 acre lot. (Catch that? POINT18 acre..... not 18 acres. Hahaha Don't we all wish!) So, after my house, and my useless front yard, I have about 2 tic tacs of real space in which I keep 8 very contented chickens. Two of them are only about 12 weeks old, so they are not running the yard as much as the big girls, but there is still plenty of room, vegetation, and bugs for them when they are old enough. We started with 4, but they got too uppity, so we added the other 4 to remind them that they ARE chickens!

The ordinances here do not limit the amount of fowl I have, nor does it prohibit roo's. I don't have any roo's though, even though I want one so bad, because I am the only one that I know of in town who keeps chickens. I don't want to start any complaining about crowing that could possibly lead to the village changing it's ordinances. I'm going to be testing the waters soon anyhow when I add 4 turkeys to the family! HA!!! I'm so excited!

The limit where we live is five hens, we have six but if they all end up being hens my adult son will take two.If we get a rooster we will eat him.

Five chickens should produce at least two dozen eggs a week for two years so you might want to consider adding a few new birds a year to keep egg production up as the older chickens stop laying.

You didn't say how old you chickens but before you add chicks consider how they will fit into your existing flock and if you have young chicks remember that new additions can bring illness and parasites with them.
