Does anyone know the codes for Fort Wayne Indiana. My friend wants a couple chickens but all she can find is land restrictions for them. The city has been taking chickens so I don't know what to think. I may give her 2 cull hens anyway and let her be an illegal.

Livestock - No person shall keep livestock in the city limits without full compliance with Chapter 157 of the City Code. For additional information call Neighborhood Code at 427- 1324.

Well everything that I read doesn't look good for chickens in Fort Wayne.

The other thing that I found was this article, and it doesn't look good for someone raising hundreds of chickens. lol


Defendant, unaware that he lived in the city limits of Fort Wayne, was raising hundreds of rabbits and chickens, which caused a sanitation issue. He man was fined $500 + court costs. Contact our department at 427-1244 if you have questions regarding the keeping of livestock within city limits and what ordinances and statutes apply to the care of those animals.


So my advice would be to contact their department.

Mmm Animal Care and Control has been taking peoples chickens. So this would mean that maybe they are doing it against code. "They" say that chickens are illegal. But I was thinking the code said something different.
More ammo for my friend. I will call after class for her this week. Maybe she will want one or two of the mutt chicks I hope to hatch with my first attempt.

I'm in Fort Wayne as well, near downtown. I'm new to the boards and have been looking around for info to see if I can have a few hens. Everyone around here says that they've heard that hens are allowed in city limits, but I've been wondering about my neighborhood association.
But this thread is making me wonder about what everyone's been saying about city limits. Hmmm...

I would love to see people change the law so hens could be kept. I know 7 people who want chickens in Fort Wayne.

Brand new to the boards. Looking for information myself. From what I'm seeing, it looks like 100 per acre but zoning ordinances apply. I would assume that since I don't see chicken coops anywhere and I've never seen them since I was a child that they're likely not permitted. If you are in the city limits, live in a residential area, and know what the ordinances are, will you please message me?

Also, can you have hens as pets? Thanks.

I know when I researched the ordinance back in 2003, one could have X number of poultry if the coop was 50 feet from any dwelling. I can't find it now (only a similar Beehive ordinance). Fort Wayne probably had taken a GIANT leap backwards. Animal control is a hard force to mess with in Fort Wayne. Same leadership for many, many years and she is not the type to relax on regulations. However, it is rumored a group has started to challenge the (I believe changed) laws. If I find out more information, I'll pass it on.

Gina, it would be great to get these things changed. My kids are young enough now that they could learn quite a bit about caring for and raising animals (aside from our dog or guinea pig), and from everything that I've heard they'd dearly love hens. I just got back from Cleveland Ohio, where I'd driven straight to the downtown area and got off the highway to find... a coop and run filled with hens. I wish we could do that here.
