Found 2 baby Canadian geese

I just read the Federal Migratory Bird Act and according to it, I cannot possess these birds. So, it's with a saddened heart that I'm forced to call my local DNR office and see what they want done with them. I can't afford a $5000+ fine. Though for the record, I truly feel that this is just wrong! Should a person find an abandoned chic or chics, and they have knowledge of how to raise waterfowl, we should be allowed to save their lives. i know that if I'm forced to release them, they aren't going to make it. They MIGHT be 2 weeks old, at best. They haven't learned how to survive on their own yet! This is not how I hoping this would go down.

My dad works for the city and found a batch of orphan ducklings that's mother had been hit by a car. He brought them home and I called the DNR and they basically told me they had more important things to worry about and if I was up to it to go ahead and raise them....

I certainly understand your apprension in keeping the ducklings. I actually hatched an egg from a Canada female that was killed. Totally bonded with her and then found out just weeks later that it was against the law. Well guess what? I'm now a wildlife rehabber! I could not stand the thought of not being around these beautiful creatures. I have 4 Canada goslings that I'm rehabbing, legally! I've had domestic geese and ducks but they do not compare to these guys.

This is the goose I hatched 2 years ago. Even though she imprinted on us, she had enough influance from her own kind to fly away. I was sad but so glad that she knows she is a goose and can go out there and make goose babies. She comes back every now and then with her beau.

How did you become a wildlife rehaber? This would definitely be right up our alley! There are sooo many Canadian geese here and we are always spotting babies walking about without parents. Especially being less then a mile from a lake. I pretty much assume that the locals that find the babies just take them to the lake assuming they will know what to do. Also, just to update our situation, the babies are still here. I've talked with the local police chief and he was a bit sketchy about it at first. However, once he drove by the house a few times and seen that they are NOT caged, left to free roam on their own and that THEY have basically made the choice to stay, he hasn't said a word about them. They are AMAZING and frankly, I don't think ducks hold a feather to Geese when it comes to being affectionate and loving. These 2 miracles come when called, cuddle, lay with us and even cry when we leave. The wife and myself can't imagine being without them anymore.

I'm the proud parent of several ducks and while out walking today, I came across 2 abandoned Canadian Geese walking in between our local railroad tracks.. Both goslings appear to be in great health and don't appear to have any defects. However there was no parents anywhere in site. After looking around to be sure they were abandoned, I decided they needed to saved and proceeded to bring them home. They both chirped and threw a fuss the entire walk, and still now sign of the parents. I couldn't bare the idea of them being hit by the train. So, of course I now have questions. Is there any laws against having Canadian Geese in the state of MN? Will they do OK eating my ducks food? I feed them Nurena Game Bird feed. Also, if they do stay here with me, will they be ok living with my free range ducks? Currently I have an adult male Indian Runner that's nearly 3yrs. old, a 6 month old female Rouen and a 6 month old unknown Black Swede.

I know alot of states require a permit for them. And if you are caught having them w.o a permit large fines and takeing of them will be applied. I know in PA wild babies or adults must be taken to a rehab center. But if you purchase them from persay a hatchery a permit comes with them proving you did not take them from the wild. I would call your local Wildlife Rehab center to confirm any issues. It would really suck to have them become dependant off of a human for them to be taken away.
