Found a Duckling

Keep him and love him. He needs protein. Try scrambled eggs and pieces of chicken. Get some dried meal worms and some non-medicated chick feed. Most recommend 20% protein feed. Do NOT get medicated as it will kill him. Also, if you are keeping him, he needs a friend. If you cannot get another baby duck for him then get a mirror so he can look at himself. I used a real glass mirror and just made sure that there was NO WAY the duck could pull it down on him. Everyone on here recommend baby mirrors but I never found one that did not look slanted or like a circus mirror making someone really fat or skinny. I wanted my duck to look at a duck not something scary. Good Luck.

Thank you. I started to feel guilty about wanting to keep him. My dad wants to keep him really bad but I was just nervous that if I didn't know how he would die. Thank you for the advice, I got him little toy birds. I used to own 2 budgies so I will use their mirror.

I can't get another baby duck... if I was able to buy a chick would that be good?

Nope don’t think a chick would be good ducks are so messy the little chick wouldn’t thrive in that kind of environment for very long. Main thing now is proper feed. And warmth they can chill easily if they get wet and are not kept warm. .

I have to talk with the others I live with. I think they want to keep it but as of right now he gets loud when I'm not around.

What do you think would happen if we introduced him to a group of mallards that live in a lake near us once he got a bit bigger?

Unless you can get it directly into a nest that has babies of a similar age (highly unlikely!) they'd kill it.

Do you have any dog or catfood? If so, wet the food so it’s mush. Then see if the duckling will eat it. This isn’t a permanent solution to the feed. Or maybe try tuna smushed up. But it should get you but until you can get poultry feed. Can you ask your Dad if there are feed stores anywhere near you? If so, and you want to private message me some towns in your vicinity. I call them and see what kinds are available to you all. Or you can do a google search for feed stores. Try to get the duckling to eat something soon. And the duckling crying for you is normal. It is imprinted on you and thinks you are it’s Mother.
