I'm thinking they are supposed to store children's toys in them. Or at least that's what I would use them for. Keeps them neat but easy to access. That might just be the teacher in me coming out.
but.. nesting boxes, I like that. We still need nesting boxes and they look perfect. We were just at Target today. I guess the DH and I will be going back again tonight.
I had a hen problem on my porch. This rogue hen kept escaping the coop and laying eggs on my dryer and everywhere else I didn't want. I finally got a plastic bucket (the kind with the rope handles, but not the HUGE size) and filled it with straw, set it on the top shelf of the laundry deal, and now we find three eggs in there every day. Imagine, three rogue chickens!
But the Target thing is perfect for my trampoline coop! I'm going to stack two of them in the center of it.
I'm using a covered cat box. I found it in our garage. I'm checking the local flea market for a couple of more of them. I will find 2 chickens in there at the same time and there is usually one pacing around pecking (knocking) the outside. I guess she is telling one of them to hurry up.
we bought about 40 of the plastic milk crates at an auction
(had been stored in an old building and dirty, brought home and put out in the yard, let them get rained on and then water hosed them clean)
for each crate, have nailed 2 nails in the side of the barn and bent them up slightly, put the crate on the nails to hang on the side of the barn and put a little hay in the crates
my chickens love them, have several rows of them in the barn now
If a person wanted to try to use covered kitty litter boxes, check with your local humane society. At the cat shelter I volunteer at people donate old boxes all the time.
