when i went to collect eggs, i found one more than usual. it was very soft. i could barely pick it up without it breaking. i'm thinking it belongs to the youngest - a delaware that is just now coming of age to lay eggs. i have oyster shell grit available free choice, so i don't know any other thing to do to help this.
i'm worried such an egg can get stuck in transit and block her up or rupture inside. is there other preventive measures i can take?

My chickens haven't begun laying yet so I'm no expert on this but it could just be her first egg and thats why it's so weak, her eggs may improve over time

I agree with the young hen's eggs improving over time. Other than my chicks, my hens are almost 3 years old and so their eggs have been getting softer and I've found them under the roost. I've dealed with two hens that both had a a soft-shelled eggs rupture inside them, and to treat them, I placed them in warm water (water level past the vent) for about 30 minutes or so, kept them in a carrier seperate from the other hens and fed them scrambled eggs or yogurt if they refused to eat chicken feed. I also made sure to offer water at all times. Over time the hens expelled the remains of the egg and were fine a few days later. Crushed egg-shell from hard-boiled eggs might supplement extra calcium (?), just make sure to finely grind up the shell so it doesn't resemble an egg.

Keep an eye on her. Keep an eye on her weight. I just lost my silver duck wing bantam to the same thing. Make sure your laying feed is fresh. I also have oyster shell accessible to my free range chickens in several areas at all times. But if she stops laying and eating it seems to always be a down hill climb. I spend plenty on vet visits when I have to ( I have two great vets that know chickens well) and what I have learned from them over the years is a lot. My chickens (all 40+) are pets not for eating.
