Some funny figures here
The basic Mini Maglite, with it's standard Xenon (Krypton?) bulb is 15 Lumens, and about $10.
The Surefire G2 and P6 with Xenon run 65 to about 120 Lumens (and up to 200) depending on which bulb is fitted.
They also can be fitted with the latest Cree 5W LED. This gives around 120 Lumens also.
Walmart carries 2 that I have seen .... the new Mini Maglight 3W LED. This takes 3 AA's and runs 45 Lumens (respectable for $25). They also sell the one mentioned earlier in this thread ... it too has a 3W LED, and is likely to put out around 45 Lumens, whatever the pack might say
3W, btw, is ample for candling all except dark brown eggs, but more power will let you see more.
My choice would be the Surefire P6, with the 5W LED. The problem is that it is very expensive ..... maybe $80 plus the extra for the Cree upgrade. As standard it will put out 65 Lumens, which is great.
There is a very good alternative ..... A Chinese manufacturer makes a brand called Ultrafire. They look extremely impressive. They use the same alloys, batteries and light units (incl the Cree 5W LED), at about half the cost of the Surefire. I haven't checked, but it is quite possible that it is the same factory that actually produces the Surefire (I do know radio factories do this).
Anyway, search
ebay for *Ultrafire*, and see what you think.
Hope this helps
ps ... I only know this stuff because I have been researching it to buy one myself. I bought the 3W Mini Maglight, and it candles mid brown eggs very well. However, I am a Geek, and I want a Surefire or Ultrafire
