After much searching I found some hova bators realy cheap on a reptile incubator website and asked the lady on this site if they are the same for chickens and she assured me they are the exact same incubators and even have pics of birds and poultry on the box itself.

and here is the hova bator with the turbo fan and picture window for $78.95

I'm a Brinsea loyalist - I've never had a Hovabator, but I've heard some really good things about them. If you get one, definately go with the forced-air, and check the humidity/water levels often.

I chose to go with the Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco though, and I haven't regretted it. In fact, I bought a second one with an auto-turner earlier this week.

annarie I will look into that. Does it only hold 20 eggs? How was your hatch rate?

It holds about 24 large chicken eggs, or 20 duck eggs. You could fit a few more Bantam eggs in it - I have 11 Bantam Cochin eggs in one of mine right now, and they only take up about a third of the space in there, so I'm guessing I could fit around 30 or more if I tried.

I don't have any good data on my hatch rates yet - I only incubated in the Brinsea once last year (the eggs were shipped in hot weather, and I had a lot of early quitters - it was the weather, not the 'bator), I have duck eggs on Day 15 in one of the 'bators right now, and my Bantam Cochin eggs are on Day 3 - I did do a little sneak random candling of the Cochin eggs this afternoon while I was moving my hygrometer to another part of the incubator though, and of the 5 random eggs I grabbed, all of them were showing signs of early development!

What I like about the Brinsea is that it's a "set it and forget it" incubator. You don't have to mess with anything. Once you have the temperature adjusted to where you want it to be, it stays there. I've read that a LOT of people here on BYC have consistent 90-100% hatch rates in their Brinsea incubators, and nearly everyone who has one loves it.

You may also want to look into the R-Com King Suro 20 - it's completely electronically controlled, it even has auto humidity control. But, at around $250, it's a little out of my price range.

annarie , so do you have to adjust temperature on the hova bator ? or is it "set it and forget it" too? do you know?

I have a still air Hovabator I have to adjust the temps on. It has hatched eggs for me better than the LGs (though if you learn how to use them, they arent too bad.)
