Found my hen dead this morning, help me figure out why, please

I would fight the lady to get a refund. Send one of the birds to be tested, when you get the results present them to the seller. Since you have never had chickens, your "flock" could not have infected them, so common sense tells her where they got it from. If she refuses, then off to small claims court. If those birds were sick when you got them, she knew it. She needs to be held accountable for her actions so she does not do this to others. IMO

You can also report her to the state and let them inspect her flock to determine if they are diseased. Perhaps telling her you plan to do so if a refund is not provided will encourage her to change her mind.
