Found one of my hens this morning in distress.
She was trembling all over, waddle and comb very pale
in color. Wasn't long before she passed.
I give them vinegar with their water about once a month
as suggested by persons on this website for treatment
of worms. Could she have died of worm infestation?
Have the indigenous dirt (or whatever it is called) for their pens to keep down
mites, etc. About the only thing I give them extra
except for the laying feed and scratch feed.....
am baffled. She didn't appear sick yesterday.
Any ideas? Do I need to take her to a vet or
someone to see what she died of? Is there a danger
to the other hens?

White vinegar or Apple cider vinegar will not take care of worm infestation. You would need to use a wormer on her to treat infestation. Things like pumpkin and other natural products will help to prevent or keep the worms down to a dull roar, but won't take care of an infestation.

Worms do in fact kill chickens if they become too overly populated in the intestines and else where in the body. The intestinal worms will consume all the food the chicken eats and starve the bird to death. It is best to send in a poop sample to your vet to see if you indeed do have worms in your birds. You can then give proper treatment.

As far as what your hen died of, only a necropsy would truly solve the mystery. You would have had to place the body in a plastic bag and refrig her body the moment she died, (do not freeze) and schedule an appointment with your vet for a necropsy.

I see no worms....course maybe I don't know what I am looking for.
Well, seems like a big procedure to go thru to see what she died of....
They all look healthy, don't seem to be under weight at all. Eat well,
free range most every day.
We have had so much rain here lately in Atlanta and noticed that there
are toadstools in the yard, wonder if she could have eaten them and if
they were poison.....don't chicken know instinctively when something
is poison?
What is best wormer to use on chickens that you eat their eggs?
I deal with Tractor Supply, guess they would have something and
know what to use.....
Thanks for your thoughts.
