Meet "Fred." He used to be "Betty," and his partner was "Wilma."

I'd noticed the past few weeks that "Betty" was getting aggressive, and had a pretty good set of comb and wattles going on. "Wilma's" aren't too much smaller than his.

Crowing started a week ago, and I just assumed it was the Silky. I could never catch the culprit in the act. A few days ago, my son witnessed the crowing, and told me it was one of the red girls. Hmmm ... methinks I was right about "Betty."

This morning I let the girls out of the coop. They hadn't been out for five minutes when "Betty" jumped on top of "Penelope." Poor "Penelope." I don't think she saw it coming. LOL

So. Here's "Fred." I hope "Wilma" doesn't become "Barney." I'm pretty sure "Daphne" will be renamed "Dave." And I have no idea what I'll rename "Velma" if that becomes necessary. I need more chickens. I might end up with 4 hens and 4 roosters. OMG!!!

I know the feeling. Sometimes the ones you really want to be hens turn out to be roosters.

Just keep watching and see though as I've had a few hens crow and some will jump on the others as like a domination thing.

If you see mating or start to see the curled over tail feathers and other rooster traits...time to call it.

I'm pretty sure what I saw was mating. Not that I've ever seen chickens mate before. LOL He's an aggressive little creep now, too. Last night, when I went out to lock the coop, he came out when he heard me coming. As I turned to close the run gate behind me, he attacked my leg. My head was turned, so I don't know if it was his beak or a nail that got me and drew blood. He was giving me the hairy eyeball this morning, too. He won't be around long with behavior like that. Time to shape up or ship out

Best of luck - I am hoping the SCF (sex change fairy) doesn't visit me and change my RIR pullet "Woodstock" in to "Crockpot". JK on the Crockpot part, sort of - (what would I do with 4 bantam cockerels of my own and now two drop off bantam cockerels?

).

Come on pullets!

I have two others that are Red Stars. The one pictured was sold to me as a Rhode Island Red. But, are Rhode Island Reds supposed to have that much white? I was thinking the Rhode Island Reds are mixes, as I bought two white Leghorns from the same person.
